Chasing the fountain of youth

Looking out my window yesterday morning I saw sun and vibrant green and knew I had to take a ride. I recently turned 70 so decided to give myself a gift of a longish solo ride on some favorite roads.

Link to google map of route

Winter's ample rains and newly leafed-out trees have produced vibrant green eye candy. Heading down into Pleasants Valley I saw clouds to the west but I still expected a mostly sunny day.

Heading up Hwy 128 towards Monticello dam I found an explosion of roadside lupine...

...and the high creek flow showed the glory hole spillway was still overflowing.

Heading around the lake The clouds thickened and a light drizzle started but the overcast seemed to just make the redbud more intense.

Along the west side of the lake the Osprey were busy lining their nests with grass for the upcoming nesting season.

Heading north along the lake I got ahead of the drizzle...

...and back to the south the rain looked to be getting more serious.

Continuing north on Berryessa Knoxville Rd. I was expecting deeper water in the creek crossings, but many were dry and others were only a few inches deep. I had the road and the beauty all to myself for the next 10 miles.

Areas cleared of dead grass in last summer's fire were now covered in fresh grass that looked like Kawasaki green. Amazing.

There were only a few small wildflowers decorating the roadsides, like this lovely little shooting star...

...and this electric-red indian paintbrush.

...continued

Chasing the fountain of youth, cont'd.

Continued-

After climbing up the last bit of Berryessa Knoxville's funky pavement I headed to Lower Lake on the more race track-like Morgan Valley Rd.

Taking Hwy 20 east I turned off on Walker Ridge Rd. for some deserted gravel road fun and great ridge-top views.

Heading north the views are surreal, with the carnage from last summer's fires in the foreground and the lush green of Bear Valley below.

I dropped down into Bear Valley and decided to try a couple of partial color:yellow shots.

Bear Valley is famous for its spring wildflowers, but things don't look too promising so far. Blooms usually peak in late April so I'll take another look then. But aside from a few poppies and tiny yellow flowers it's not looking like a very good year.

I headed south back toward Hwy 20, enjoying the solitude and roadside views.

Last but not least was a ride down the sweet swoopy curves of Hwy 16, past dramatic rocky cliffs and hundreds of redbud in full bloom.

Heading home toward Winters I took Yolo County Rd. 88 past Hedgerow Farms in hopes of one more visual treat. Sure enough I found this nice plot of poppies screaming, "Here we are, looking beautiful!"

I arrived home feeling young at heart, if not a bit sore of butt.

Are you capable of taking a lousy picture??

Great stuff.

Happy Birthday!

Did you wait to collect the big bucks on Social Security at 70 to pay for your gas?

Yes, most of my pics end up victims of the delete button! Just a few survive.

I started taking SS (aka "lucky bucks") a few years ago. Gotta love it!

Everyone, I'm humbled by the praise. And thankful for the acknowledgement that it's the ride, and the attitude, not the age of the rider. Get out there and enjoy our riding paradise!
