It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood...

...starting with wild cloud reflections in my gas tank.

So I decided a longish ride was in order to gorge on the beauty before the dry season.

Link to Google map of route

I rode past the dramatic rock cliffs at Monticello Dam...

...then followed Hwy 128 where it was tree tunnels, twisties and more tree tunnels...

...and a step-back-in-time rest stop at the Pope Valley crossroads.

The reservoir along Butts Canyon road was looking really fine that morning.

I headed north on Hwy 29 toward Lower Lake, stopping to feast my eyes on a field of poppies.

Nearing Kelseyville I decided to take a side loop and explore Soda Bay Road, a 16 mile route following partway along the southern shore of Clear Lake and a new road to me. It's a pretty ride through wooded lake shore, past marinas and lake side homes, along the base of Mt. Konocti, past the Black Forest, Clear Lake State Park, vineyards and pear orchards.

I passed lots of tempting lakeside coffee houses and cafes, but was set on lunch at my favorite, the Bluebird Cafe in Hopland. So I headed west on Hwy 175, an amazing 17 mile corkscrew path climbing steeply up and over a mountain range before making an equally steep descent into Anderson Valley.
The start-

The climb-

And the descent-

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, cont'd.

Lunch time! I demolished a tasty salmon burger while enjoying the campy decor.

Then it was time to hop back on 175 and enjoy it in the opposite direction.

This time I opted for Bottle Rock Road then 175 down to Middletown.
Bottle Rock, with Clear Lake receding in the distance-

Retracing my steps I headed back down through Pope Valley toward home, still savoring the beauty.

So much beauty everywhere, I couldn't even look down without seeing more.

Life is good.

But then I'd have to come out of retirement and could not take these weekday rides. No can do!

Great pics as usual and a great route.

Yet another of your beautifully maintained bikes that would benefit from a black plate!

The first time I've stopped there, the road was way more bent crossing that creek. At least three 90's and a 150 packing, stopped for the cool shade, big exploratory mode @ half lost, what could we find in 10 miles?

Bottle Road Road is great, but I always feel like it lacks grip -- I mean even without pushing or anything, just that the type of asphalt lacks grip.

Can't beat California scenery this time of the year. Thanks for sharing and reminding us all to get out there before the hills turn brown and the flowers disappear.
