if we want to ride there, er, and play, and generally have a cool place nearby to recreate ith our OHV toys, it would be good if as many of us participated in the various steps that will happen.

From SB 155 (2021)
When considering acquisition and development of properties to expand off-highway vehicle recreation
opportunities, the department may prioritize properties that have potential to serve large urban areas
such as the Bay Area and Central Valley, offer potential recreational opportunities for off highway
vehicle recreation, and potential opportunities for motorized access to nonmotorized recreation.
Properties for consideration may include areas within existing State Parks and State Recreation Areas
including, but not limited to, Henry Co State Park.

I will be there for a backpacking trip this Friday. They are having their annual "Coe Back Country Days Weekend". It is a lottery based system, where the winners are allowed to drive in via Bell Station and backpack at designated lakes and ponds in the Eastern edge of the park.

Coe is a beautiful place. I hope that it is not opened up for off road use.

Sounds like a great trip, Lefty.

I agree. Not every place should be an OHV. In fact, I sort of prefer them to be separate. Way too much great land destroyed by irresponsible assholes in side by sides for me to feel otherwise at this point. Same thing with bicycles in wilderness. It isn’t restricted access; if you want to visit and enjoy, just hike in. Part of the reason things stay beautiful is because everyone cannot get to them. Easy access almost always means destruction by the masses.

Henry Coe was mentioned in the legislation that got about $30M for the Carnegie expansion property. It was mentioned because of its size, 82,000 acres and it is under utilized and under funded by state parks. I'm guessing that all OHV is looking for is acreage similar to what was lost at Carnegie.
The legislation doesn't restrict consideration to just Henry Coe or any other state park.

we did the math in one of our other recent BARF/Henry Coe OHV threads … 3000 acres would be less than 3% of Henry Coe’s 80,000 acres, I think (I’m bad at math).

The area CORVA is looking at on Friday in Henry Coe is on the south edge, and would be separate from the rest of that state park.

as an example, I use Fremont Peak to camp and hike, and would never know Hollister OHV is nearby.

hear CORVA is looking for suggestions for other possible places to spend the Carnegie money (underutilized and underfunded state/county parks).

our club is trying to come up with a proposal for a youth electric motorcycle OHV area in McClaren Park (like San Jose’s electric OHV proposal), and/or in the Crystal Springs watershed, ha. There’s also three miles of bicycle/pedestrian trails around Laguna Honda Hospital we could maybe multi-use with kiddie electric motos. reaching out to the various Supervisors to see if we can find a champion for our OHV cause. help deal with the scofflaw dirt-bike groups, etc, maybe, and double ha.

“Share the Road” as my bicycle friends like to say … :ride:party

my big dream is to use some of the Carnegie money to buy the 60,000 acre superfund site that is Clear Creek from the Feds, and put that back to legal OHV use. got an email in to my Congress person with that idea. :laughing

CORVA Henry Coe 'First Look' Visit Information

Thank you for registering for the CORVA 'First Look' visit to Henry Coe State Park on April 29th. We will meet by 9:00am off Kaiser-Aetna Rd at the Parking Area by the vault toilet up the road from Bell Station. We will be carpooling and need AWD or 4WD vehicles that can hold 4/5 people for the short trip to Dowdy Ranch Visitor Center. For those that want to travel afterwards to the Hunting Hollow entrance of Henry Coe State Park, we have included a map with directions from Bell Station. The Hunting Hollow Entrance to the park is open to the public and can be accessed on your own time. We expect the visit to the Dowdy Ranch Visitor Center area to be about 2 hours. Bring water and dress for the backcountry.

If you have registered, but find you are unable to attend, please contact us at info@corva.org. We are arranging the carpooling.

When: April 29, 2022 9:00 AM, PDT
Where: Bell Station, Kaiser-Aetna Road Parking Lot

apparently the event is sold out! I know a scalper though.

OMG. That was spectacular

Tomorrow is the annual CORVA get together at Prairie City SVRA. We may hear what OHVers thought of the Coe tour.

I certainly appreciate the remote backcountry hiker experience, but to exclude others that do not compromise that is er, selfish and elitist.

BIG park, that actually has a large wilderness designated area.
