Cooking & Family Dinner - extinct? KFC Sucks!

I give KFC a pass because without KFC there would be no famous bowl

hb_famousBowl.jpg

Fixed that for ya. And damn those are tasty!

As far as cost per calorie goes, eating out (wherever) can be much cheaper than preparing food. Lack of corner stores=gas to shop. There are many hidden costs to cooking, the chief one being time as some have mentioned.

My GF tries to cook sometimes and once paid 2.99 for a tablespoon of fresh dill weed. How? Bought the blister pack of dill for the meatloaf and picked every little frond off the stems like a surgeon. Honey, dill stems are like cilantro, no need to excise every one. I had to stop her from buying another because the recipe called for a bit more than one TB. That would have been $6 for herbs!

We shop smart and I do the cooking. I make kimchi and kombucha and seasonal preserves. We share costco bulk purchases with friends and family. If health and true enjoyment of cooking and eating is your thing, you will pay more than the folks who can stomach cheapo gut busting burritos and the like day after day. Always.

"Ethnic" markets are a savior for me. I tackled homemade pho recently and got the cost down to $3 per (large) bowl. The trick was enjoying it four days in a row. But I have another 5-6 servings of broth frozen for the SE Asian food party we are throwing.

Cause of the KFC Monday Special, we have Chicken most Mondays. Can't make this it at home for this price. Otherwise generally cook meals at home is the norm. One meal with one more day of leftovers.
However seen busy couples using Gourmet Meal delivery service for the family dinner each day. Only problem is the Kids have gotten real picky about their food when eating at others houses.
So many more options for heat and eat meals today. Can get frozen dinners for a few bucks, can't beat the value.

Not to mention for 2.99 you can be guaranteed it is the cheapest, mass produced, antibiotic and pesticide laden "food" money can buy. Then add the artificial flavorings, preservatives and sweeteners on top of that. :barf

In addition to the health ramifications I think these adds are devaluing the importance of cooking and I see issues for future generations. Hell, my little sister 29 after 5 years of marriage is already "taking night off" from cooking. My mom at 60 just started that a couple years ago.

I'm not saying the wife/woman's job is too cook. I'm saying it's someone's job and people should learn. Too often do I run into people my age and they say 'I dont cook but can help with the dishes'. :wtf How hard is it following a recipe? Nothing's going to explode and kill you. Cooking is losing it's importance because everyones time is "more" important. Not digging that.

While I'm sure they'd love for everyone to eat there everyday, I take it more as, "have too much shit going on and want a night off? just buy this garbage, these idiots love it". Healthy is essentially meaningless for the once a month oddball meal.

The twist? Dubbs will go buy groceries and then decide he doesn't want to cook.

i'd rather get a rotisserie whole chicken from costco for $5 than from kfc...

places like safeway and even walmarts are offering the same deals...

That's just the information KFC is legally required to provide... but cholesterol is more that 50%DV

Fresh Chicken Marinated With: Salt, Sodium Phosphate and Monosodium Glutamate. Breaded With: Wheat Flour, Sodium Chloride and Anti-caking agent (Tricalcium Phosphate), Nonfat Milk, Egg Whites, Colonel’s Secret Original Recipe Seasoning.

What artificial flavors? :laughing

It's the families job to cook. I understand there are time constraints but I feel food preparation is a perfect time to bond with your child. :dunno I'll let you know in about 10 years if this is correct :laughing BUT my mom made us set the table and we had to help clean up, we also shucked green beans and peeled garlic amongst other things. This was the time to tell mom about our schooling and to engage her in questions.

two thirds of americans are fat.

why are we surprised people eat garbage?

and we continue to allow it. The way I see it, I'll pay more today for healthy choices in the hopes that I stay healthier longer into old age.

We often tend to think that the times we live in are uniquely bad, while nostalgically thinking that yesteryear was uniquely good. Neither is true.

Trends in US home food preparation and consumption: analysis of national nutrition surveys and time use studies from 1965–1966 to 2007–2008

Background

It has been well-documented that Americans have shifted towards eating out more and cooking at home less. However, little is known about whether these trends have continued into the 21st century, and whether these trends are consistent amongst low-income individuals, who are increasingly the target of public health programs that promote home cooking. The objective of this study is to examine how patterns of home cooking and home food consumption have changed from 1965 to 2008 by socio-demographic groups.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional analysis of data from 6 nationally representative US dietary surveys and 6 US time-use studies conducted between 1965 and 2008. Subjects are adults aged 19 to 60 years (n= 38,565 for dietary surveys and n=55,424 for time-use surveys). Weighted means of daily energy intake by food source, proportion who cooked, and time spent cooking were analyzed for trends from 1965–1966 to 2007–2008 by gender and income. T-tests were conducted to determine statistical differences over time.

Results

The percentage of daily energy consumed from home food sources and time spent in food preparation decreased significantly for all socioeconomic groups between 1965–1966 and 2007–2008 (p ≤ 0.001), with the largest declines occurring between 1965 and 1992. In 2007–2008, foods from the home supply accounted for 65 to 72% of total daily energy, with 54 to 57% reporting cooking activities. The low income group showed the greatest decline in the proportion cooking, but consumed more daily energy from home sources and spent more time cooking than high income individuals in 2007–2008 (p ≤ 0.001).

Conclusions

US adults have decreased consumption of foods from the home supply and reduced time spent cooking since 1965, but this trend appears to have leveled off, with no substantial decrease occurring after the mid-1990’s. Across socioeconomic groups, people consume the majority of daily energy from the home food supply, yet only slightly more than half spend any time cooking on a given day. Efforts to boost the healthfulness of the US diet should focus on promoting the preparation of healthy foods at home while incorporating limits on time available for cooking.

Can I get the recipe, I was looking at pot pie recipes this morning, they are only cooking the chicken for 35 mins. Chicken takes longer to bake than that! Im hoping to find one that won't consist us of eating raw chicken :laughing

I grew up like this, too. We always had a big garden in the summer and were expected to help tend the garden, pick and process what we grew, whether that meant cleaning and bagging them for freezing or preparing them for dinner.

It is pretty easy to eat healthy meals pretty inexpensively, but it does take some time. Back when I was working 80-hour weeks, I'd shop on my days off and make lots of homemade frozen dinners to get me through the next work stretch so I wasn't eating crap from the hospital cafeteria or vending machines. A big piece of meat bought on sale can be broken down and prepared several ways, or leftovers can be used for soup that you freeze for later. I do this all the time when Jason smokes a tri-tip.

Now that summer has arrived, I buy most all of our produce at the farmer's market where organic produce is substantially cheaper and fresher than Safeway.

We go out to eat more than I'd like, but that's mostly because Jason works from home, and so it's nice to get out of the house.
