ive always admired your pictures. what lenses do you use again if you dont mind?

Thanks for the nice compliment.

This weekend I used these Canon lense's:
15 Fisheye
24-70 2.8L
70-200 2.8L
300 2.8L
400 5.6L
600 4.0L

and at some junctures 1.4x and 2x Canon Teleconverters.

drool... how does the 300 compare to the 400 and 600 as far as IQ? when do you use a converter? say 300 with 2x compared to the 600?

did you edit much in photo shop? i would really love to see some raw images.

IQ in order best-to-less-best:
300 2.8
600 4.0
400 5.6

The 600 is huge and tough to hand shoot (though I did hand shoot it). Some times the 300 with a 2x gets the job done but the 2x will soften images a bit. I normally would use the 2x only where razor sharpness is not the priority. Also a converter slows autofocus speed a ton so I sometimes use manual focus with the converters. You can rent big lenses from a couple of different sources in the bay.. Borrowlenses.com comes o mind.

I barely ever open photoshop. Images are shot RAW and processed to JPG via Lightroom. The photos posted here are essentially "as-shot", just run through the JPG process from RAW.

nice... i think im ready to upgrade to pro gear. either a d3 or a lens. and its going to be either the 300 2.8 or the 200-400mm f 4

I don't know what you use now so hard for me to say... A D300 makes a pretty good motorsports body if you're not inclined to spend the $$$ for a D3. Also D2X used.

There is no substitute for lens quality. The pro level lenses are almost universally better in every way. There are exceptions of course but usually in SuperTelephoto there is not. rent before you buy so you know its going to do what you need it to.

Sweet pics for sure!

yeah... i shoot with a lowly d200 sigma 50-500 for all motorsports stuff. the lens needs to be stopped down to f10+ to get acceptable results. the reasoning for the body is with higher iso speeds, i could still boost up my aperture and still get descent pictures at 1/60 on up.

about the 200-400, ive read reviews and saw pictures comparing it to a 300 + converter and it produced sharper images straight from the lens. 300mm is a little short for what i need but i couldnt afford anything more than 5k for a lens. i simply cannot justify it in my mind.

My best photo doesnt = your crappyest shot
I hope to take a crappy shot like that some day........

and thanks :thumbup:wow

Depending on the converter the sharpness and contrast can be seriously reduced. But some times closer is better then contrastier.

Each manufacturer has their standouts in the line... for Canon the 300 2.8L is the mac daddy. Canon says it, any other shooter who has used one and I say it. You have to consider your individual shooting needs and budget of course. The Nikon line up is of course different.

If you want to shoot motorsport (all aspects) I would suggest the following optical ranges to cover pit, paddock and racing:
20-70
70-200
300+ prime or maybe the 200-400 you mentioned
~1.3x tele
speedlite flash like SB800

Buy the best gear you can afford and an extra stop or 2 of speed (f2.8 vs say 3.5) will pay off in the end.
