I saw this video at ZX-10r.net and thought it was a nice watch... CR500 Motard vs 20 sportbikes at the track...

...a good watch indeed. dude spanks everyone in the corners. they pull away when they get a little straight patch, then he reels them in and spanks 'em good...

That was fuckin awesome!!! I've been talking about doing this for years with a KX500 (more power, higher top speed) I love the way the SB's would pass him on the straights just to get smoked in the next turn.

That guy could carry some corner speed :) That said, it looked like a friggen free for all! Fun, but very unpredictable. No one seemed to be able to hold a line in front of him. That's why track days have no interest for me. I am just not comfortable with people stuffing me in a corner or weaving back and forth when I am pretty much fully committed. Was the red flag from a crash or end of session?

Reminds me of this one...

People have no idea how fast these SM bikes are!

The 490-500cc Two Stroke Dirt Bikes were a different ball game, than the Four strokes, though, as a platform for SuperMoto bikes.

Either way...the main thing is...SuperMoto or Motard, got here because..
a think outside the box, movement was started and grew.

We could do some outside the box thinking right here in America.

There is no reason what-so-ever that all the thinking has to come from Europe.

My friend Sean raced a CR500 SuMo with CCS in SoCal and basically won or podiumed every race he entered--and he could run that bike in every class. Middleweight, lightweight, singles, etc. He would get protested regularly but they couldn't do a thing about it, as singles got to run in every class at the time.

the reason is the great majority of american motorcyclists are very conservative (not politically conservative, but conservative as in orthodox). 80 or 90 percent of the streetbike market is cruisers and sportbikes, and no matter how awesome the bike is outside those categories, it will get outsold 20 or 30 to 1 by the more traditional styles.

^^^And that "conservative" is just another way of saying , can't think for themselves.
And the reason for trends of Cafe Racer, and Street Fighter, and Motard/SuMo, came from Europe, not here...and Europe gets bikes that don't come here, because we as a market aren't bright enough to buy the bikes...and the manufactures know that, and won't waste their money shipping bikes here, that won't sell here.

They ship them to where they will sell...that's the business they are in.

In the 70's it was the Can-Ams that were very competitive. Then in the mid-80's Rich Oliver was sporting a KLR I think and stomping on folks. Been around for awhile this outside of the box thinking stuff...:teeth

I don't think I would have had fun with that guy on the CR. Don't mind the passing, but the line changes at apex would have been an issue where someone was gonna get punted after about 3 of those. 2nd video was beautiful to watch, corner speed and predictability :thumbup

The reason we don't get many bikes is because of the market and don't forget emission standards. United States riders relate to displacement for many reasons...:laughing....riding fast isn't one of them. :teeth

Seeing the MX front fender on the track just makes me smile :) especially in the straights when it lifts up like a little mini wind-brake... If he streamlined that, he might get another .2 mph top speed at the end of the straights :laughing

If I got the go ahead to get another bike to add to the garage, I really think I would get a supermoto of some type, even before seeing this video they just seem like a blast to ride! easy to work on, don't care if you drop it, etc :)

Rider is using the lighter weight of the CR500 to advantage in the corners, it doesn't take as much skill as riding a heavy bike that's more difficult to brake and wrestle around the turns. I can vouch for the lack of skill needed because I won a couple of AFM races this season on a CRF450R (the CR500 of today). :laughing

A rider in C group. This more a comparison of rider skill than bike vs. bike.

Come back Rick.Ive been practicing...

That goes for the rest of you Cowboys too- AFM has a SINGLES class bring your 450's out and throw down!

A camera on the suspension and tire/ground contact would show the why of the fender lifting.

As far as wind brake goes...the rider and bike is the wind brake. A Sport bike mount / fender sure would be slick...though.

Gordon Siem was pretty quick on his in the late 70's. He did pretty well in amf and even ran a few nationals. Wheelies out of every corner (well before it was fashionable).

Here's a couple shots of him at the '78 sears national

At an amateur level, its not about the bike. This guy would be quick on anything. against these guys anyway. They were parking it in the corners (c level track day?).
