How do people with bucket helmets do it?

How do you deal with the wind in the eyes situation? With my FF helmet, I can't have the visor open going any faster than 15mph or my eyes start to tear (that's with sunglasses on too)

I normally wore a 3/4 open face helmet when riding my Yamaha cruiser, and usually never had no problems with bugs. About once a month I get hit in the face by a big bug. But I ended up switching to my full-face helmet when riding on 680 from Fairfield because you got a face full of tiny grit and rocks that really sting. That's when I learned why harley riders always have a scow on their face. You have to tense up your face muscles into a grimace to lessen the pain. :laughing

I wear contacts, but sunglasses keeps the wind out of my eyes.

So the fact that it hasn't bit you in the a#$ yet, means it is a valid idea?

Your accident sounds like it should have shown you just how valuable a full face helmet is worth over a shortie, but from your post, it is almost like you are defending it and saying it will protect you (when you or someone wears one)? You don't say if that is why you usually wear a full face now. You describe the damage to the helmet, and it sounds pretty serious; what that should have done is shown you how much damage a helmet can take, and a light should have gone off saying something like "holy crap, don't I want that protection for my whole head, not just the top of it? Cause I think, my whole noggin is important to protect." Just think if your neck was twisted just a little more, or you tumbled a little more, and so the impact didn't happen to your helmet, but instead your face, jaw, ears. That surely would not have felt great. There are unquestionably people 6 feet under who hit in the "wrong" spot.

as for the other arguments

a proper fitting full face helmet is very comfortable, and I can forget it is on

yeah, want to leave it on the bike to be peed in, or stolen (OK, only $25, but how do you get home without getting a ticket now?), or have some homeless person with lice try it on and put it back

and use it for the kickstand, yeah, no way that will compress the foam in the helmet (if it is a legal shortie it has the EPS foam), and limit it's ability to protect my head). And nothing like going down the road with a couple bugs crawling over your scalp, because they crawled in while it is on the ground.

rock hitting goggles should have also made you think, "hmm, couple inches over and it would have been my nose or mouth, don't really want that..."

less wind resistance?? except that the beanie can catch air and act like a giant sail pulling the strap further and further into your neck, full face, properly fitted won't do that. And the wind resistance over a smooth surface, ie a ff helmet, is less than over a very bumpy surface, ie the average person's neck and face area.

Wear what you want, I don't care, but don't try to make it out to be a reasonable rational choice.

Rode w/o a helmet for years and I'm still here:wave

Crashed at over 90 and bent a guard rail while wearing a "bennie" and didn't die as far as I know.

Now wear a full face 95% of the time but .........

"bucket" is much lighter and imo more comfortable. So comfortable that back when I wore one regularly I would at times get a block from the house and realize that I forgot the "helmet".

Nice to be able to leave it on the bike and not give a shit. $25....big deal.

When parking on soft ground it doubles as a foot for the side stand.

Wear decent eye protection and the rocks arn't a big deal. Had one crack the lense once and was glad I was wearing them.

For cold, rain, hail bugs etc, wear a scarf.

Easier on the neck for long rides because there is less wind resistance.

Wear what you want and all that but having put a good # of mi w/o a helmet, a "bucket" and full face I find the "bucket" more comfortable than the full face most of the time. Not suggesting giving up the full face; just responding to your concern about comfort.

Oh yeh, and re:that get off at 90. It's not like they provide no protection. There was skin and/or blood on the front forks, back fender, seat, bars, mirror and some other stuff. A couple of snaps on the front of the "bucket" were ground off, there was a 3" scrap on the right side and the strap was chaffed. It was obviously better than nothing.

Yeh yeh yeh........I know but at my age the sausage creature will only be cheating me out of old age anyway.

Read it again (edit).

It did bite me in the ass and I never said it was a valid idea.
It did offer protection and I never said a ff didn't offer superior protection.
Yep, you're right I did not say why I wear whatever. Not the OP's question.
Yep, or a fucking light could have gone off and said "holly crap bikes are dangerous, buy a prius".
bitchin.....glad it fits.
Don't leave it in the city so n/p. If it's stolen I'll ride down the street and get a new one. Big fucking deal. Did that in San Jose. What if.........what if......what if some homeless guy scratched his balls and touched the grips.
It isn't legal so no worries there.:laughing
Oh damn, bugs. Never thought of that:(
And damn.....tagged by rocks too? shit!
I'll bet your dad is an engineer huh? Well what ever. Got a shit load of mi on both and after a few hundred mi it was more comfi than the Shoei or Arai. edit: sounds like you speak from experience. How many mi. ya got on the beenie?
Thanks....I will.
You don't care?????:(
Never tried to make it a rational choice / or not. Just addressing OPs question unlike.............your post.

edit: Unless you sport a vagina lectures are pretty much a waste of time on me.
Try again...........slowly this time. The Evelyn Wood thing isn't working out all that well for ya and if you feel the need, don't be afraid to break out the dictionary..........k?
Thanks........

uh the real harley riders have a giant ass touring shield, you can hide a elephant behind those things

After moving from road bicycle racing to a motorcycle there are some things I miss about a helmet that only sits on the top of your head.

1. You can talk to people around you.
2. You can eat and drink while moving.
3. Lighter airy feel.
4. Put headphones in/take 'em out

I would regularly be going 20+mph on flat ground, and as fast as 55mph downhill, with average speeds on descents 30-40mph in the twisties in nothing but lycra and a little foam helmet, oh and 23mm wide tires. Didn't bother me too much, but I wouldn't consider it on a moto - mostly psychological.

I noticed when I got my motorcycle/ff helmet that the wind would bother my eyes more than on a bicycle, maybe the small surface area on a full face helmet multiplies the force of the wind on your eyes? Thinking about a flip-up style to get the talking/eating benefit but Murphy's law would remove my jawbone if I crashed wearing one flipped up.
