Any chain will deter most thieves. Of those persistant ballsy bastards that are left, they probably know what they are doing and can cut through just about anything. Give me a portable dremel with 2 reinforced cutoff wheels and 30 seconds, and watch me cut through ANY steel (cable or solid chain). My take on it is that it will not stop a thief anymore than a high quality commercial chain that is available. If they are going to cut it, they are going to cut it. and at this point, the lock is probably the weak link.

Just buy a Buell.
Problem solved.

30 seconds? :wtf I suddenly don't feel safe.

Full coverage, even on the shitty bike. Although it would be sweet to have to tow a trailer to carry the chain.

I just wanted to call you a dingus.

Most chains are gimickky. I broke a branded one for a Barfer when he lost his key. brought my acetylene torch but didn't even need it.. a $15 harbor freight bolt cutter did it with little effort.

I go to OSH and get the thickest chain they sell for a few bucks a foot. watch the staff struggle with their hydraulic cutter for 20 minutes as they cut it from the spool. then throw a good lock on it. that's where the money should be spent... on a quality lock.

only problem is you need to make a sheath for it so it doesn't scratch your bike up. I slipped one through an old mountain bike tube that worked well for a while.

:wtf I'm still trying to get over 8lb/ft.

Imagine carrying around a 5ft chain that weighs 40lbs!

I don't believe anyone was suggesting we ride around with it.
It's intended to be left where you store your bike for the night.
....but yeah.

Pretty much! My thought was more down the line of equipment like vans, trailers, etc. Or something you keep at work/home permanently.

I have been way too busy during work hours this week to get a quote on a bulk purchase to determine an accurate cost. If I can get a sample I can hold a contest to see who would win, lou's cigarette lighter or a Dremel. :rofl

I was a locksmith for years.
MUL-T-LOCK
Absolutely miserable to get through.

If i ever ran into one on the job my only and immediate words were...
thousand bucks or i leave.

I used to run with a hardened tow chain and a milspec lock. Of course, that was in Larkspur where thefts are not really common (back then)... :laughing

Why not just get an Almax chain? Probably costs a bunch to ship across the pond, but that's the only problem I can find with it.

Yeah, shipping costs as much as the chain from UK. Lockitt shipping costs are a fraction of the chain (not cheap but still).

You should probably stop riding then. Motos are dangerous:twofinger

I was looking at the thread "How long to get comfortable on the road?"

And, I thought "I'll let you know when I get there..."

What's your (& others) opinion on these?:

Squire SS50CS

New York Fahgettaboudit Mini

I was a locksmith once upon a time. But my experience was limited to 4-5 pin kwikset knock-offs. (i.e., I wasn't very good at my job.:()

I have the fahgettaboudit chain and lock. It is stout. I am sure someone could get around it if they really wanted to, but it creates a deterrent which is all I want.

The 2 most vulnerable parts of the lock are the shackle and the lock cylinder.

For the shackle, best way to go is to choose a lock where the shackle is not exposed, or depending on latching requirements, as least exposed as possible. Then make sure the lock cylinder is drill/pick resistant.

The reason i use mul-t-lock for everything is their really unique pinning system. Damn near impossible to pick (last one took me 8 hours to drill through) , bad ass key, and they come with a key card thats registered in a database to your name. your the only one authorized to receive a duplicate key or re-key it.

you will instantly know the quality when you hold one in your hand.
gives me a boner every time.

Cutting torch laughs at your chain and lock...Kids that don't have tools of the trade, are deterred...
Bike thieves know their job.
