It's okay not to wave

^^This^^
Seems to me the rider stomped on the rear brake as his #1 evasive move. Fail every time.

Certainly could have been a lot worse. As noted, jamming on the brakes makes steering "difficult".

Glad you opened this discussion. I always feel bad for not waiting, but keeping the rubber side down is always more important.

When I don't get a wave back, I just assume:

Either is a NEW rider,
has the clutch pulled in to slow/stop , ...
or
is a 1%er and is too cool to wave.

Forget two fingers...use both barrels!

If you can't drop your arm to full extension, extending index & forefinger and leave it there for more than a moment...

Don't wave!

Sneaking a hand off the left grip with elbow tight against your ribs, barely splitting two fingers shows you are RUB. (Rich Urban Biker)

Don't be a RUB.

Then there are those BARFers who kick their foot up to press the inside bar and counter-steer as they progress through a turn to give the website's two-handed salute.

You know who you are.

Please add: too busy paying attention to traffic to even notice the motorcycle coming the other way.
