I threw away my old tent cause it was a pile and slightly too short for me. I had the "hiker biker 2" and I'm about 6ft tall and the tent seems to fit Simone who is 5'10". Also one of the fiber glass poles broke, and I didn't like how long it was when packed up.

So looking for a nice single person tent that packs up nice n small and has enough room inside for a backpack and tank bag.
I'm also in the market for a camp stove. Thinking of getting a jetboil.
Maybe a new bag too.

What else do you bring moto camping?

My checklist for camping at the AFM races last month:

Tent
Sleeping Bag
Mini-Pad (Like an airbed thingy but smaller and no pump needed)
Pillows
Warm Clothes
Camera x accessories
Laptop x accessories, probably wouldn't take it camping though :dunno
Tripod
Beer

Couple saddlebags and a bungee cord, it was all on and I really had a little room to spare.

Biggest space taker was the sleeping bag... I'm in the market for better options but since I"ve got 6 sleeping bags, I really am not sure I need to spend money on a 7th.

Get a two person backpacking tent.

Most 1 person tents are not large enough, and honestly any lightweight two person is pretty small as well.

Also, I don't usually bring camp stoves. I usually pack in premade food when on the bike, and use the fire for any cooking. I think they are too much trouble and take up too much space. Unless you are going to be camping for very extended trips I wouldn't bother personally.

might as well head over to REI

ive got a Big Agnes 2person tent, Fairview2, that packs down pretty small for a 2 person. packed its 6.5"x16", much shorter (packed) than most other tents. its discontinued now, but im sure u could find a similar 1person thats even smaller from them. just make sure u get one w/ a nice vestibule for extra space... or if u really need room, buy a small 2 person tent.

as for stoves, i have a Jetboil and an MSR Dragonfly. the Jetboil is great for oatmeal, pasta, warm drinks... and thats about it unless u carry another pot. the Dragonfly is much more versatile, powerful, and doesnt require canister fuel, but it does take longer to setup and u gotta carry a pot. i like having both actually when cooking for groups, but id prob only take the Dragonfly for solo stuff. something in between the two for setup & versatility would be the MSR Whisperlite. one slight warning, the piezo spark starter on Jetboils really blows, so carry matches just in case.

Something like below...

It has enough room for you and all your gear, plus the rain fly has a vestibule to keep your muddy boots.

Plus it looks like it's on sale now:

i use a hi-tec tent from big 5 i picked up for $20 (was on sale and 20% off coupon on top)...it's 6'8" long, so i can stretch out without any problems...it's extremely compact and lightweight...you can't sit up and there is very little room to change...everything has to be done laying down....

i use a self inflating air mat that is 2/3rd size...perfect and a must....for non-cold weather..you can pick up a 50 degree sleeping bag that compresses to the size of your fist for about $30 at sports authority...when you go to 25 degrees rated sleeping bags that compresses this small..you are in the $100++++ range....i also use msr pocket stove which was on sale two weeks ago at any mountain (sale and 20% coupon on top) for stove, fuel and titanium pot for $50...

That. And you don't always have to camp alone - you might find the perfect young man... oh, wait, you sold your Ducati, never mind. :twofinger But yeah, get a two-person backpacking tent. Also, this. (Actually, the whole thread has good tips.)

Aaron, I do a lot of moto camping, and recently acquired a freebie little 2 man dome tent. It's not quite as small and compact as the moto-specific (and pricey) tents, but it should do the job. If you want it, I can give it to you. I haven't used it yet, but I was told when I acquired it that it is complete and in good shape.

Aaron-

I will not be comfortable in a tiny tent. We need a large tent that gives us freedom to 'move around'. Also, we need to be able to zip our sleeping bags together, so that is a MUST HAVE!!!

I don't like it when you post all of our business on the internets, we were supposed to keep the secret between us. Next thing you know- Ant will find out.........

:mad

Another vote for 2 person tent. I do a dry run in the yard when i get new gear so I'm not trying to figure out things in the dark for the 1st time

There is an accessory that slips over the inflateable pad and turns it into a chair.

:rofl

finally I find someone as weird as me!

Agreed. I have a tiny Sierra Designs 1 man tent that weighs nothing and packs small. It really sucks to sleep in it unless it's raining. So either be prepared to sleep under the stars when it's nice, in a nylon condom if it's raining or get a 2 man tent which will accommodate yourself and all of your gear. I would really suggest aluminum poles as they are a major weight saver.

Which tent would you prefer on a long rainy day the micro SD on the right or the 2 man?

one more thing to consider when comparing 1 and 2 man tents....

the more air space u have in a tent in cold weather, the colder you are going to be. 1 person in a 2person tent will be colder than that same 1 person in a 1person tent. so, if ull be camping in cold weather and want a bigger tent, make sure to take a thicker sleeping bag or some extra layers to wear in the bag (all that meaning more weight and pack size).

of course, if u r camping in the summer heat, go for it. just dont buy a crappy 50$ tent from Big5 or something that is poorly ventilated. might as well sleep outside in those cases.

Basics:
Decent tent. Decent means enough room--so as said, a 2-person backpacking tent is a good choice. When I'm alone I use a Sierra Designs Vapor Lite, 'nuff room and it keeps the rain out. Whatever tent you get, aluminum poles and a full-coverage rainfly with a vestibule for your gear are musts. The footprint thing that you can buy with it is usually worthwhile in terms of tent longevity, too.

REI brand stuff, tents and sleeping mats and sleeping bags and such, is often a good value as well.

I use an MSR Whisperlite stove with unleaded gas in the fuel bottle when I'm doing a remote trip that will involve cooking, and that way I have a touch of extra gas. I've also had perfectly fine trips with no stove, on more major roads. Fill up the thermos with tea or coffee for the morning, get some edibles from a restaurant or grocery store before camping, be happy.

Get a warm enough sleeping bag, too. Being cold all the time on a trip can detract from the experience. Down compresses much better than synthetic, but you have to be careful to keep it dry. I keep mine in a waterproof Sea To Summit dry stuff sack.

Me too. Gotta play with the new stuff...I justify it to myself by seam-sealing the tent in the yard.
