My first bike insurance quote

I have Geico $410/year full coverage top of limits except on moto only $50K for property damage

Just changed my auto/moto/umbrella insurance 2 weeks ago. So sick of thinking about insurance I could scream, but I'll take a stab at this. My rate is $414/yr with Allstate, full coverage, including uninsured motorists (UIM). All liability limits $250/500K, $2K med payments.

The UIM costs as much as regular liabilty, actually 29 cents more. Comp is relatively cheap.

Almost passed on the medical payments, and I had rejected UIM with Progressive because that part was so expensive. Still a little undecided about that, but UIM pays pain and suffering, and I suppose there's going to be plenty of that if I ever go down.

Progressive is running a real bait-and-switch ad, imo. They say something like, if you don't like Progressive's (quoted) rates, select different limits. WTF! What kind of advice is that!? You have to match your insurance needs to your risk and your assets (or loss of, in the case of a law suit). Btw, my high limits are tied into an umbrella policy. Higher moto limits reduced the cost of the umbrella, so my agent balanced the two for lowest cost.

Geico is showing greener pastures already.

I hope this is OK that I post these photos.

The left is lower liability, lower UIM, and includes Collision.
The right is higher liability, higher UIM, and no Collision.

Geico has this thing where liability must be equal to or greater than UIM (which maxes at 100k/300k.) Is this standard in the industry?

Furthermore, this doesn't include the Good Driver Discount that Farmer's offered (25%). Perhaps I can work this in with a call to an agent.

Your insurance agent has the bike model wrong. He's got a ZX600R rates, not EX500 rates. Check out Mike Rosa: http://www.mikerosa.org/ He's my insurance agent, sponsored the SV class when I was racing it, and is a rider/racer and BARFer himself. He'll get you hooked up.

these rates are higher than my Allstate quote, in every category. But you've selected lower limits and opt'd out of a lot of things so I had to extrapolate. It's such a bitch comparing rates. An apples-to-apples comparison requires a lot of time and patience. I'd check State Farm also. They were very competitive. But I was looking at a lot of things, house included.

(grumbles) must stop thinking about insurance ...

I'll skew the stats for you: Geico coverage for a male age 59 riding a Suzuki C50T, with 6 years riding experience:

Bodily Injury Liability - $300K/$300K: $34
Property Damage Liability - $100K: $12
Medical Payments - $2K: $37
Uninsured & Underinsured Motorists - $100K/$300K: $111
Comprehensive - $500 deductible: $14
Collision - $500 ded/Waiver: $57
Towing & Labor Costs: $10
Discounts for MSF course and 5-year good driver
TOTAL for 12 months: $275

It's those idiots who insist on not having insurance that drive the costs up for us all!

Jesus christ that is a lot in insurance. I've gotten full coverage on bikes worth around 8k for 1/10th of that. Have you shopped around or are the K bikes just that expensive to insure? Even my friend's ST doesn't come within 20% of that.

I haven't shopped around in a while, but I probably should. The comp coverage is the killer. For a while, I was somewhat difficult to insure, having an accident and a ticket on my record.

Just to put things in perspective:

I'm a 29 year old male, and despite being a homeowner, I only have my truck (88 Ranger) with State Farm along with my R1. I have full coverage on the R1 - the works - and coverage limit is maxed because of being a homeowner.

I pay just under $50/mo for the coverage on the R1. In fact, because they treat the truck as the main vehicle, the liability-only coverage on my truck is nearly $10 more than the R1. I've also filed two claims on the same existing bike coverage, both times I was paid out for a totaled bike (Aprilia), and for repairs (on the R1), so yes, my current rates even include the resulting raised premiums.

Yours just seem excessively high, but maybe an accident/ticket on your record really does affect you that much.

Well... I don't own a car. The bike is my primary mode of transportation. $220 is the total cost of my policy. With that said, yes, I think it's a little high.

To be paying about 400% more than I am, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with what your primary mode of transportation is. Shop around.

Maybe you'll save enough to be able to buy a car. :twofinger

You should have seen my insurance quote when I bought my first bike... Had a car under AAA and asked them how much. They quoted me a bit over $6K a year on a bike that was worth $5K.

I switched from AAA, they we're ridiculous! I had regular AAA so I thought to keep it simple, but they cost a extra arm, leg and torso.

my car insurance is under AAA as well. When I called them to add my ninja 250 when I bought it back in 2008, the lady paused, then said you will want to get it insured elsewhere. It says we are going to charge $3000/ year. Even the agent on the phone told me how ridiculous that is.

Speaking of AAA, I heard they're the only insurance company that will include motorcycles as part of roadside assistance IF you have insurance through them. Does anyone else have moto roadside?

Having uninsured/underinsured insurance coverage is CRITICAL for riders. Something to consider. Medical insurance will only fix you up. What happens if you are out of commission and cannot work for a period of time? Did you know that there are potential loss of wages/income coverage if you have uninsured/underinsured?

I will be more than happy to answers any questions you may have PM and/or give my office a call.

I'm currently paying ~350/year for a 20 year old male with no accidents/points just to insure my R6 on its own.

50/100 limits.
Liability
Comprehensive (100 deductible)
Negative on the collision, not worth it. I'll own up for my mistakes.. least I have to. :x
Negative on medical payments (mom works at kaiser, and while I'm still young, I'm going to take advantage of that).
Yes on uninsured/underinsured, same limits.

It's a bit steep, but being young and riding a sportbike doesn't match too well.
That's with a good student discount. :dunno

Anyhow, I spent an afternoon in Andre's office asking one of his agents to give me different rates for different plans I had in mind.

Oddly enough, adding a 90's pickup to my policy with basic liability lowers my moto insurance so much that I'm paying less overall if I keep my moto where it is. The bonus is that it's marginal at that point to add collision on the moto for the peace of mind.

Just food for thought. :nerd
