My daughter loves her Tesla and using the Self Driving mode. I have always told her it is not safe for motorcycles and to watch for motorcycles. Friday she drove to Seascape from Stockton in Self Driving. She got concerned when her Tesla move left to the edge of the left lane, then a motorcycle split to her right. Looks like Tesla has done an update to move over to give lane splitter room. She told me she noticed that the Tesla infront of her did the same.

What say you Tesla owners is this a new software update?

So she had no idea the motorcycle was coming (first clue was her car moving over)? Sound like she didn't heed your advice- time for greater emphasis...

Waymo has had this feature since they were still part of Google. Hopefully Tesla fixed the bug that caused their software to ignore single brake lights at night (because cars all have two of course) which resulted in a death of a few riders.

I look for them but quite often don’t see them until they’re there :dunno. Ride like you are invisible, safest for everyone.

Now Barf must have a Tesla owner who can verify there has been a change in the software to look for lane splitters.

when I was commuting I would often see Tesla "drivers" with both eyes and hands on their phone, the car stayed where it was in the lane which was preferred for me when I split by. If Teslacks start reacting to splitters I could see it not picking up on the 2nd splitter right behind the first and moving back in to lane position.

You have always 100% seen every splitter coming up on you in your cage?
You are 1/1
I like to think I maintain a high percentage, since I am in a work van, and visibility is limited I try to always keep a good radar of whats coming from behind.

I'd really hope that it's smart enough not to do this if it's in any other lane, to avoid the risk of veering into the path of another rider who's splitting between different lanes.

Yes, we should probably all only split between lanes 1 and 2, but sometimes that's not the case - I don't want to be splitting (correctly) between lanes 1 and 2 and have a Tesla in lane 2 veer into me because it sees a splitter (slightly closer than me) between lanes 2 and 3.

But I guess that's no worse than currently, with non-FSD cars.

I was riding in my son's 2024 model Y last night. We were split by a moto and I thought the car held its position so I asked. He said "it will hold its position almost to a fault. Even if a car slides over a bit in a sweeping corning, it does not move."

Of course it will. It's just reading lane markings and other objects in the space. Lane splitting in anomalous behavior. Just one of the reasons motos will be squeezed out of public roads eventually. The % of moto registrations is tiny. Car drivers hate us or doubt us only slightly less than bicycles.

:laughing

Thank goodness that won't happen in my lifetime. :x

Tesla... do you bust your owners if they are sticks?? Waymo does. :laughing

Oof - I'm not sure how I feel about that Waymo thing.

Well, I'm actually fine with Waymo calling the cops, but given that the cops let them go ("released back to their parents"), then chances are it was clearly a bright orange not-painted-black toy gun, so firearms charges were out. Which is not what anyone would refer to as a "pellet gun". Tsk tsk tsk NBC.
