ther than wearing it constantly is there anything specific you guys do to break in a leather jacket?

Nothing specific, just wore it in the house while watching CSI, Scrubs, Law & Order, Walker Texas Ranger, took a crap, ate, some Survivor man, some shows on HGTV, then went for a ride.

I did the same thing the next day, except Scrubs wasn't on, so I watched some show on A&E, then two episodes of CSI: NY, had lunch, then another crap. On the third day the jacket felt a little broke in, so I decided to pull one off, along with the smell of leather. Then it was alright.

Why is this thread in Moto Photos???? :confused

hahah shit sorry, i had a bunch of windows open searching for uhh...ummm photos..

i wore mine with my sweater....now its pretty loose....

bah

Bumping this old thread because I have the same question. Got a custom vanson that I haaaaaate wearing right now because it makes doing any damn movement so difficult. What can I do to speed up the process? Brian at scuderia mentioned it would take like a year to fully break in, I thought he was exaggerating. ...

I am so dissapiont. I thought this thread was gonna be about breaking in to a car for a leather jacket. :twofinger

Have a heavy leather jacket. Just wear it i think, but, heard of folks stickin them in the dryer for a bit. Kinda makes sense. Relaxes them a bit maybe.

If I'm trying to break something in that's mainly made out of leather, I try to do something that makes me sweat in it and then keep wearing / using it until it dries. At that point it's reshaped enough to fit my shape a little better.

*But* if it doesn't really fit right, nothing is really going to fix that.

Set the jacket out in the sun to warm it up.
Rub in generous amounts of Johnson Leathers dressing.
Wear the jacket.
Repeat often.
In a year, it should be fine.

What model did you get?

Try wearing it to bed, seriously! Helped the break-in for my custom AR3.

First time I sat in it fully zipped, the jacket rode up like a box and the collar choked me. :mad:laughing

8 months into it, the panels are all much softer and the arms are starting to develop rolls, but the seams are still stiff and that's what makes the jacket feel so hard.

Be patient, wear it as often as possible, ride, ride, ride, and it will soon mold to your frame.

Obenauf's to the rescue!

Easy peasy:

Okay, okay, seriously:
I just picked up a new Dainese suit and used Obenauf's leather oil and their Heavy Duty LP (Leather Preservative) to soften things up quickly. I did TONS of research before putting anything on my new gear, and this came up as the safest/most effective leather treatment out there. (Mink oil and similar leather preservatives have been known to damage the stitching/non leather components of the jacket, so they are not recommended.)

As others have said, nothing helps break in your jacket better than wearing it. The benefit of wearing it vs just throwing it in the dryer with a bunch of bricks is that your leather will actually soften in the correct areas (elbow joints, armpits, knees, etc.) to conform to your body movements.

That being said, the Obenauf's stuff helps speed up the process immensely. New leather is not as porous and won't absorb this oil as much, so I had to let it set for a few hours, then wipe the excess off. Also, I shouldn't have to say this, but: if you put oil on your gloves/leather pants, make sure that it has been fully absorbed/blotted off as much as possible before riding! That shit be slippery, yo!

Good luck and happy riding! :burnout
