Hopefully, when I pass the MSF rider course. Is it true that I'll have to take another written test to recieve my license?

I don't plan on taking my learner's permit (since I already have a regular driver's license)...once I have my MSF certification...are there anymore tests?

If you havent taken the motorcycle learners permit test then you need to take that. Also if you havent taken the normal auto written test in the last 18 months then you need to take that as well. You only do one side of the auto test, but you can only miss 4. The motorcycle test you can only miss 7.

What Nick said. But if you havent taken your DMV permit/written test yet, wait till after you pass your MSF course since the class portion of the MSF course pretty much prepares/gives you the answers to the DMV written test. (But if you're on like a 2 month wait list, might as well get your permit today) Also some MSF courses offer to pay for your DMV written test fees, so you might want to check up on that.

get a book from the DMV...That writen test is harder than a mofo!!

Last timei checked you had to have a motorcycle permit to attend the class.... once completed then you go to dmv to show them the certificate ....then they check your license , and if's coming up time for renewl then they ask you to take the auto test .....then they combine the license all on one card and confiscate your license there (auto)..... and issue another new opne with both classes on it

Of course its been a while since i took mine ..so things might have changed and some schools do it differently ..

the only good thing about the written test is it cost $15 to take the test three times. If you fail those three tries (even on the same day) you just pay another $15 and you get three more chances, you can sit there all day until you pass if you have too...I'm not speakin from experience, I passed my second try.:teeth

I got this portion from the two wheel safety training website

What do I need to take the basic course?
Before the start of the first classroom session you must provide proof of:
A valid driver's license OR
A valid learner's permit .... OR
A certificate showing successful completion of the classroom portion of driver's education.

me,

i took msf w/o permit and passed it. (feb 02)

went to dmv next week to take written for permit (passed)

got msf certificate in mail week after

went back to dmv to show certificate of completion and got me license.

basically, really no need to have motorcycle permit for msf. just need driver's license (maybe driver's permit, but am not sure about that one).

Well like i said ..its been a while ....... kewl though ...now i know

:confused read the book first. there's only a few things you need
to remember. (like the 2sec. distance) otherwise it's common sense. safety is #1 concern.

goodluck!

I took the MSF course about a year ago.You do not need a permit to take the course. The MSF course will waive the DMV skills test but you still have to take the written test. The MSF program will help a lot with the written test material. I would advise you to get the DMV book and look it over and also go to their web site and do the practice tests. You don't want to go in there with your MSF course completion slip and then flunk the written test. The written test is half motorcycle and half car questions and you can only miss four on each section. Everybody told me ,oh yeah it's easy. BULLSHIT! It's not hard if you study up but if you go in cold look out. Hope this helps, good luck and ride safe.:eek:ld-cool PedroPat

Thanks for all the advice! I still have more than a month and a half to go before my class starts. Plenty of time to read the handbook (ditto b/c i'll have to take my class-c test again).
