Looking to dive in to the sports world to a degree and get my 5 year older into something. Swim lessons are weekly but she needs other types of activity. She's pretty high energy. I like the idea of jiu jitsu or taekwondo but reading about the differences and it's tough to determine if one is better than the other to start with. Might be something else.

Video's of BJJ (brazillian jiu jitsu) look cool but also scary when some break the rules with slams on the back of the neck area.

We can do some trial clases locally and see if she gravitates toward one or the other.

Father inlaw recently said he prefers TK, being a "6th degree black belt" granted he's 63, is very lazy with the motivation of a sloth. He likes the less injury side of TK and the focus on kicks and not grappling on the ground.

My sister did Taekwondo for many years growing up, she now does MMA. We both did gymnastics for most of our childhood and through high school.

I was never personally a fan of TK, required too much discipline for me and I'm kind of a wuss :laughing If your daughter is like my sister (competitive, enjoys structure and receptive to feedback) she'll probably really enjoy TK. I don't know anything about BJJ or JJ in general.

I like rock climbing ~ it's a bit more freeform and positive imo. I see lots of kids at the gym all the time and it's a great way for them to burn through excess energy, make friends, and gain some upper body strength.

Is there such a thing as trampoline training in this day and age?

Seems trampoline training is not recommended for kids under six.

I have four kids 6 and under and have enjoyed gymnastics through Encore.

Our girl did TK, from age 14 though. It was self driven and very good for her and she continued with martial arts through university. When she said she needed a helmet for MMA tho, we conveniently never did that. She was able to break boards too. Have fun whatever you share with her.

Im a black belt in BJJ.

At that age, I dont recommend she starts until 7-8. Its doable, but she will be overpowered by some of the bigger kids. Wouldnt worry too much about slams, most kids classes are pretty basic and half the time they are mostly playing games.

I told my sister to enroll my niece into gymnastics first which translates well into many other sports including martial arts. Rolling, learning how to fall and understanding your body will work well in any physical endeavor. If you want her to do martial arts like now would recommend something easy like Hapkido or TKD. If you want her to actually kick someone ass if they lay hands then put her into BJJ or wrestling when shes older.

Good for you.

Might check out Ninjitsu if there are studios still around.

I did several styles and it was my favorite by a mile.
Kenpo (sort of similar to TKD) was fun and makes for good sparing and tournament stuff. Not really grappling stuff either if that concerns you.

My 5yo grand daughter is taking Kung Fu. She really enjoys it. Pretty basic stuff and I think any style will be at that age.

Had no idea that Agent Orange was a bad ass.
Now I respect that along with his signature line.
Always dug that!! :thumbup

Did a fair amount of TKD and a bit of a few other arts.

IMHO, a lot depends on the school and master, more than the art. There are a billion "mall TKD" shops out there, which teach basics, along with a good dose of discipline. But not a lot more than that. BJJ is, I think, more demanding (you're going to hurt a lot more); my kids did BJJ but starting at 8 - 10yo. 5 might be a little early. I'd go sit through a class at each of the places you're considering and read the room...that'll tell you the right place.

We helped raise my ex's daughter and I pushed her into escrima / arnis b/c I think all women should be handy with a knife; my ex ultimately pulled her out b/c too violent (Joke's on her, daughter is engaged to FBI agent who is teaching her a full stack of weapons).

When I was a kid, I had two friends (brothers) and though they were older, they participated in two sports: Jiu Jitsu and ballet. They both turned out to be fine men.

LOL, thank you for kind words my man!

My son practiced Kenju Ryu Ju Jitsu for many years, eventually earning his black belt. Discipline.
He has turned out to be a fine young man. This discipline and involvement in White Stag for many years has held him in very good stead.

Hans painted my home and is good friends with one of my brothers. I’ve been to his dojo and his home. Good guy.

My wife had a Brown belt in Aikido when we met. Both girls started Aikido when young older daughter lost interest, younger daughter had a black belt when she went to college. I just felt better knowing she knew some self defence.
