When a tree falls in the forest....directly on to the road

On the flip side, ABS sucks on goaty roads,
Indeed. ABS tries to cope with compromised surfaces, which is essentially what a goaty road is.

Where I used to live, I had the rather steep, but short, hill to come down. At the bottom the hill was a metal grate.

In my truck, the ABS on my left front would inevitably fire as I was braking to stop at the bottom of the hill. Being near the beach, it was not uncommon for it to be damp with dew or fog.

On my bike, I would use the front brake up to the point of the grate, and release it and rely on the rear to stop me or get me over the grate. I had zero faith that it wouldn't instantly wash me out if I hit it under braking with the front.

I never had a bike with ABS for that street. ABS would have been an interesting experiment.
