Title says it all. I've been taking Danish classes for a bit now and need to type out my homework. I'm missing three vowels. I have the Danish keyboard loaded, but it's a pain in the ass since the layout is a bit different. I just want some quick key commands for my Surface. Anybody know how to do this? I've looked up several websites for this, and oddly, my first attempt at doing what they say seems to work, but then it never does again--somehow Word or my Surface thinks it's wrong and corrects the "error" from there on out.

I need these (both capital and lowercase), so six new letters. Ideally the commands between capital and lowercase of the same vowel won't be too different.

å, Å
æ, Æ
ø, Ø

As a half-Dane on my father's side, I'm both honored & curious as to why, but :thumbup regardless.

I can't help with your issue, tho. :teeth

EDIT: Could you use ASCII to insert what's needed? ALT-134, etc?

Can't confirm a Surface will do this but,

On my laptop (in tablet mode) or actual tablet, when a letter key is held on screen, a menu of alternatives are revealed. All those you listed are contained on the menu for the 'a' key. See- æ Æ å Å ø Ø

Alt key codes are faster than the above.

Thanks for the tips! I don’t have access to my computer right now but will try later. Will have questions…

You can always use the windows character map. Open the start menu and type charmap in the search box. You can copy/paste from there and it'll also give you the alt-codes.

Thanks, Dan. I had one of those work for me on my tablet. Then it wouldn’t do it again. It’s a mystery why.

I tested that--multiple use in the same document--and didn't see what you saw.

Is it like autocorrect of a spelling error? Or does the intended character simply not appear?

EDIT: Try this test: In a document where characters fail in the way you describe, try instead to paste them in after copying from your OP in this thread. If Word is reacting as if to a spelling error, the same effect should occur.

Also, are you using a Danish dictionary (File/Options/Proofing/Custom Dictionaries)? That might be helpful.

I will try that.

I do have a Danish dictionary set up (it automatically defaults to that when I change keyboards, but it goes back to English when I use the English keyboard. It's the same on my phone.) I'll play with that setting also though and just see what I can get it to do.

I plan on living there part-time in the next several years. I went to school there for a short time in college and enjoyed the place.

I think the ASCII codes are what we're talking about below, but perhaps not. I don't know much about computer code (less than Danish even--as if that's possible).

Also, you can try your own sigil, like AO, or whatever, and then do a global replace with the cut and pasted character. That was you can at least keep typing, and then clean it up later.

Macs do this apparently. Sadly, PCs do not. Or at least I haven't figured out how to do it.

I'll give this a go. :thumbup

Are you using the Danish keyboard when the error occurs? Those character codes may work only on the English keyboard.

Ducati Honey-

No Mac here. Windows and Android only.

If your PC does not have a 'tablet mode' allowing for an onscreen keyboard, then you will need to use ALT codes. Phone, tablet or a laptop that has 'tablet mode' should allow access to all those special characters.

Familiar with Windows Character Map?

To access:
Windows Key + R
This will open a run window
In the dialogue box, type charmap
Opens Windows character map
Type what you need, leave the rest. ;-)

This is as far as I've gotten with this today: I must have the English keyboard going and then I can get this one to work.

Å : CTRL+SHIFT+@, A

I haven't tried the other two. And the Å is always capital. I have to manually get it to go to lowercase. I need to screw with it a bit more, but only had my lunch hour to do it, and I was busy finishing my homework for class this evening. I'm looking into the other suggestions, guys, and appreciate all the input. Hey, at least one of them is starting to work.

Stay tuned. Sometimes all one needs to fix these issues is to ask for help, and then it starts working. :dunno

"Tusind tak!" so far.

Haven't had a chance to work on that...geez! Gimme some time. :laughing I don't even know the Windows Character Map is. I'll figure it out, but class is starting shortly.
