BARF Calling it quits the last weekend in May.

I have zero problems logging onto BARF. No delays at alll. So why are we changing what obviously works?

I don’t understand any of this but will probably hate it at first, then adapt. Thanks for the warning, most of all.

I really like BARF. In another thread, billsmith and I mentioned sports talk radio. I realize that I listen to sports radio because I cannot listen to regular talk radio because it’s so tribal and polarized. Years ago I listened to KGO before the entire industry decided to tailor the polarities with separate stations.
BARF represents some kind of moderated but mostly intelligent dialog and I appreciate it. More so since I retired and have much more limited community contact.

FWIW, I really, really, really, really, really really miss KGO. So many intelligent hosts wrongfully silenced.

Can kitchen sink default as the main landing page/threads on the new site :laughing

Thanks Climber! But I'm gonna put a "we'll see" on this. Perhaps you can build a "translation table" of the current URLs and the "new" URLs for each thread. I assume the best time to do this is during the database import. Then I assume you can have an operation occur to either plow through the threads and update them. Or (better) have a plug-in of some sort that will 301 redirect the "old BARF" URL to the new Xen URL.
It would require the translation table you mention, it would require current ID and new ID for thread links, but there are also a ton of places where somebody copies the image link of an already uploaded image, so there'd also need to be a table for old image links to new image links.

That points towards building the table during the conversion. You might be able to use the old tables as a look-up then look at the new tables, but that would be much more processor intensive because you'd have to do a ton table searches.

What form is the conversion script written in? You might be able to output information then utilize that in another script to fix broken links, you'd at least know where things came from and where they went, that's a big improvement and probably easier to experiment with as you could copy the database to another and play around with it until you get it perfect. Nobody gets everything right with a process this complex.

"... doesn't "understand" some of what's being asked from it, so it sits for a moment considering it, then finally says, "whatever, here you go" and sends you data."

we do want immediate gratification, eh?

i always thought the barf server was slow cuz it was going to some 486 pentium with like 2gb ram via 56k dialup in teh basement

Proper. :thumbup

Steve moved out. My basement now. Missed the memo huh :twofinger

:kiss

A bit nervous to be honest. When it comes to digits I pretty much know I got ten. So useless.

Naw, I knew. Was in the spirit of flashing back to early BARFage :thumbup

Are the smarty-pantses working on the change doing nightly imports or whatever so it doesn't all have to be done at once?

Is this a complete do over? Please tell me y'all ponied up for the better search option.

Out of the box search on XenForo is really, really bad.
From a tech perspective, yes. Moving from VB to XF is native in the migration piece now. Almost automatic.

I'm aware of the XF search. Testing it seems fine. If we need to move to the upgraded plug-in, I'm sure the cost isn't that bad.

In my beta testing "search" has been great. I don't think any upgrade was done. :dunno
It wasn't. And I agree search has been good in testing.

On another forum that didn't use the upgraded search, I found it was not very good. I mean, I guess they sell an upgrade for a reason.

They've since upgraded, so its hard to recall the main issues (other that it was bad enough I didn't bother much with it).

But I think a big issue was that they didn't index the posts, just the titles and meta-data (user, date, mostly).

Even then I think I tried to pull up all of my old posts on that forum, and it struggled. I do know I searched for stuff I knew existed, and could not find it.

Here's a simple test: can it find my superman joke in budmans joke topic? (assuming you've already done a preliminary conversion "just to see", I know this was done on the beta a long time ago).

Edit: Heh, even this forum can't find that post.

Edit 2: Found it: https://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8914178&postcount=287

I had to crawl through the entire joke thread to find it, but it's there. Of course its on page 20, I started on page 70.
