Do you have it? Covid-19

That is my experience. For the vast majority of people, it’s no worse than the flu. But since the media hyped it up so much, there are now people who freak out over Covid. It’s really no worse than the flu. And the flu kills hundreds of thousands of people every year.

I’m not vaccinated and I’ve had Covid twice. I found it to be no where near as bad as many flus I’ve had.

Later variants have been more mild. The earliest variant was no joke and is the reason for all the measures to limit the spread. Your individual experience, fortunate though it was, does not have anything to do with overcrowded hospitals and morgues over capacity.

We have not had a flu epidemic like that in living memory.

It was never confirmed, but we think one of our buddies had it in December of 2019. He's an offshore guy, ridiculously fit, and had been travelling, then came back with the flu and fever of 106. It shook him up and he said he's never been that sick in his life. What was especially funny about it was that, once it was politicized, it was just the flu and was no big deal.

The majority of the population has never actually had the flu. Then when they really get it, they freak out.

It’s still a minor annoyance for the vast majority.

What would you say to the millions of people suffering with debilitating long-COVID symptoms? You think it's "just a flu" to them?

And let's not forget that influenza and COVID-19 are totally different types of viruses and COVID is much more contagious.

Not sure when you’re thinking of, but not this century.

I may be out a few years, but the reason I'm back here is because my bell notification on this forum has told me twice of your response after I've already viewed it.

So what more do you want me to say?

He did go too far in saying that, but COVID isn’t the fucking flu and vaccination led to better outcomes. Your ongoing position on this is ridiculous.
Vax led to better out comes for some groups and debilitated others. 2024 information on treating Covid is much different than 2020 and consensus is centering around not continuing boosters/ etc. if you're not in a high risk group.

The novel flu virus killed way more people.

Close...Pneumonia. That's what killed the large majority who had Covid infections and continues to wipe out 2.5M (give or take) humans/ year worldwide. There's a Pneumonia vax that came out beginning of 2024. No idea if it's any good or tested, but I worry about pneumonia for people way more than Covid...especially after Northwestern Medical concluded the Cytokine storm theory wasn't correct.

Treatment was hit/ miss early on too. I remember the critical elements in early outcomes from live/perish were the severity of the infection (time/ concentration of initial infection) and time to treatment. Original medical advice when contacting Covid (symptoms) was stay home, rest for 5-7 days. Measure SP02. Below 88/87 go to ER immediately. Turns out, during that time period pneumonia was setting in and by the time patients arrived at the hospitals, ventilators were needed ASAP. Those vents supercharged and fomented pneumonia as well.

Fortunately, medical providers got a lot better at treating Covid AND Covid's severity ebbed. In the end, we went full circle medically. Much of the basic advice given early on (even here on BARF) hold true today. But, everyone was kinda guessing then anyway. Everyone has stories...

I've always considered pneumonia a complication of whatever has infected you. I mean, if a hippo bites my arm off and I die of blood loss, well, I was killed by a hippo and not Exsanguination.

My point was the global influenza pandemic killed a lot more people and a notable amount of them were young and healthy. We were not as much a global community as we are now, and the population was smaller. Put that on pause for a hundred years and where do you think we'd be today if that replaced COVID? I wish I could see where COVID fits in the conversation a hundred years from now.

You're right on influenzas. It's easy to say Covid was the catalyst, but still: 2.5M die annually of pneumonia. I kinda think pneumonia is the killer here, same as it is when one is bed ridden or down with broken ribs and pneumonia takes hold. The Ribs were the catalyst that opened the door and pneumonia walked in like Sammy Gravano...

For the same reason I wouldn't ask a barber to perform an appendectomy on me, I don't suggest relying on lay opinions when it comes to medical issues vetted and rooted in the scientific method rather than rhetoric and politics. :2cents

#YMMV

Yeah no. That's not how that works.
Well, not usually at the same time, but sometimes there are gray areas, and even brand new experimental methods that become the new. I'm sure the Dr's thought they were doing the right thing when treating our first president.

Well by all means, if some particular theory you're following has been tested and peer-reviewed, post it up so we can see it. I'm absolutely open to change when it's proven through the proven scientific method. However, most of the theories I've seen that attempt to derail what science has already proven in this world are lead by crackpots who have no demonstrable scientific evidence to support their claims.

Well, I was recently reading about dark oxygen and whether it's a good idea to mine the polymetal nodules from the seafloor. I think we should stand firm on a 10 year moratorium until we really figure it out.

Also, stem cell knee injections. I was pretty close to signing up for the trial until I learned it was a 50% placebo study.

Oh yeah, let me toss in the carnivore diet, or just going carbless. I think the traditional food pyramid is a scam for the profit of the processed food industry.

Ninja post! The best part of health is it's intensely personal.

Jason: I've had my fair share of bad haircuts.

Well, posting a tested and peer reviewed scientific theory is not likely to yield anyone who is already married to the mainstream tested and peer reviewed scientific theories to change.

I haven't argued against any particular mainstream controversy on this topic other than the comparisons to the flu, and I don't think we can really make that comparison in any meaningful way. Same with the vaccine, and what you say is precisely the reason.

I look at it like law enforcement - it's not designed to provide me specific personal protection (i.e., lawmen are not my bodyguards), but rather to serve society at large.

I cannot say whether a bout with the flu would be any worse for me today than one with COVID, but generally there are higher deaths with COVID ( I do not recall now if that was total annual count or per positive infection - which seems impossible to measure). That does not mean I am more likely to die from COVID vs the flu; however, my personal experience thus far lends greater concern over the flu. I cannot say whether a vaccine would be better for me or not - it's not like they present no risk, and they do not eliminate all risk from COVID - so it's gambling odds, IMHO. I usually get the flu vaccine, but fewer COVID vaccines.

Just lost a friend on Friday.
She had an internal infection, got Covid and it led to sepsis. Boom 44 yo gone. :rose
