She likes chicken. But even if I'm not cooking chicken or making a sammich, she looks at me like she's expecting something from me every time I'm in the kitchen.

Of course, she's depending on you now. She's probably scared and confused with the situation. Having a dog become loyal to you can be pretty rewarding. Maybe when he gets out of jail she'll bite him and want to stay with you!
 
Both of our beagles absolutely loved being in the kitchen. I would imagine that is true for any dog. That is where food happens. When she got in the way too much, we’d put one of her dog beds at the end of the kitchen and make her lay in it. Sometimes she would hang out of the bed half way, watching us intently, but at least she would no longer be under our feet.

And If you can find a good home for your brother’s dog, that will remove yet another tie to your brother. It sounds to me like he’s not good for your life.

Maybe I should think of it that way... Hadn't really considered that.

As far as the rewarding part of having a dog, let's not go there. Because I don't want it. I don't want a relationship with a dog. Even if that was on table, not this dog. When I flip her a couple sausages while I'm cooking anything, and she's looking at me with cute eyes

But the supposition that the dog might want to stay with me over him...

"not good for your life" is an understatement. Thanks for chiming in. We've been often on different sides of conversations but you've always been a super great guy I trust your opinion on.

I am weighing my options of what do.
 
Sometimes one must divorce themselves from the chaotic forces in life to find peace and happiness. At one point in my life, I did that and though it was incredibly painful to do, it was the absolute best thing I ever did. Though the memories still haunt me to this day, I remain happy.
