Gun control activists demanded better data. What they got surprised the heck out of them

The 2026 National Firearms Survey also found the previous survey underestimated defensive gun use

A Georgetown professor just taught gun control activists an important lesson: When you criticize studies that don’t support anti-gun talking points, be careful what you wish for — you just might get it. In this case, they got an unprecedented amount of new data that obliterates their narrative.
In 2021, professor William English published the findings of his National Firearms Survey, by far the most comprehensive assessment of gun ownership ever conducted. The data demonstrated that defensive gun uses were commonplace, that ordinary Americans really like the weapons gun control activists hate most and that longstanding stereotypes about the "sort" of Americans who exercise their Second Amendment rights were misplaced.
Gun control activists predictably hated this. They attacked the report’s conclusions and author, blasting the survey over nitpicky concerns. English explained how the alleged problems wouldn’t have significantly impacted the results. Critics categorically dismissed the report anyway.
So, English humored them. He re-administered the survey, "fixing" its alleged "mistakes."

If gun control activists hated the 2021 conclusions, they will likely lose their minds over the new ones, which English just released online. The improved and redesigned 2026 survey fails to vindicate their criticisms and deals even mightier blows to anti-gun narratives.
Here are four of the most significant findings from the new report:

1. Possession of ‘assault weapons’ even more common

<SNIP>

2. 2021 survey likely underestimated defensive gun use

<SNIP>

3. More Americans are legally exercising their right to bear arms

Gun control advocates are losing the public-carry culture war. Seventy percent of gun owners now report at least "some circumstances in which they carry a handgun for self-defense," up from 56% in the original survey.
That doesn’t necessarily reflect public carry, since some may carry only on private property. Still, the new report estimates that 33.6 million Americans are "public carriers" — that is, they have a concealed carry permit and carry for self-defense "at least sometimes." That’s a remarkable 60% increase in five years.

What could possibly explain this?
<SNIP>

4. American gun owners are an increasingly diverse group

Finally ONE LAST <SNIP>

I still do not own a gun and don't plan on purchasing one.
Unless the zombies come.

I don't live my life in fear.
Maybe you can help change that.
Nor do I. Generally, it is simple- remove yourself from situations that seem they can go south- long before they do. Do a lap around the parking lot before you park- eyeball what's what. If things don't pass the sniff test- go somewhere else. Ain't no big thing, there are plenty of other errands to do when I am out & about.

The four fundamental rules for firing a gun are:
- Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
- Treat every gun as loaded.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.
- Know your target and what’s beyond it.

as a survivor of being born into the incorrect family, I can attest that I am cautious.
I do not get myself in trouble any more now that I am in my 60's.

Kinda hard to keep this from falling into the Ptrap but from 1994 until 2020, because of the passing of the Republican led Davies act, the CDC could not study gun violence. The CDC resumed these studies in 2020 but the the current administration removed the funding for these studies.

I am off to shoot tomorrow.

A little Mossberg home defense shoot for the Mrs and I and some 9mm point and click for all other things that try to fuck me. I don't have a CC permit, but I would if it was easier for a good citizen around these parts. I certainly would not carry often, but when retrieving stolen cars in Oakland I might. :laughing
Mmm fox news, good stuff, no agendas

Agenda does not make it false. If folks discount stuff just because FOX or buy into stuff just because it is MSNBC or the opposite then it is time to just say BAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAA.

How about historical precedent of presenting pure, unadulterated BS as "truth".

Reputations matter for "news" sources.

I only read Reuters

He is new here so I helped him out. I am sure he will get to reading the TOS at some point. :teeth
