Excellent photos!

I love the Lost Coast area. It's so remote and beautiful. I usually spend my Thanksgiving week camped at Mattole Beach and don't usually see anyone for days when exploring all the back roads around the area. There is lots of fun goat trail stuff near Alderpoint, Ruth and Zenia, too.

You guys should go back in the spring when everything is green:thumbup

WoodsChick, that's hilarious, you took the same exact picture! I do like your's better. Is there any goaty dirt road within 1000 sq miles of the bay area you haven't been on? :laughing I can't wait to go back. Don't know if I can wait until spring though :teeth

I'm not sure if there'll be any more pictures. I think I'm the only one that had a camera and I was only up there for two days. Let's see if luckett has anything when he comes back from the remainder of the ride.
 
Awesome! I have camped a lost coast a bunch of times and I would love to take my bike up that way. I want to ride there:(

Yeah, I've got a photo of me and my bike on the beach and up on Usal, too:laughing I guess a good photo-op is univeral and recognized by us all, eh?

I do tend to get out a bit and ride that kind of stuff, as it's fast becoming one of my favorite types of riding. It's easier on my body and equipment than full-on dirtriding and I ain't getting any younger, that's for sure. Every one of my weekends is spent riding, preparing for the next ride, or recovering from the last ride...like I'm doing now:(

No need to wait til spring. If you aren't afraid of a little wet pavement and dirt, Thanksgiving is a great time to be there. No one around, and everything is usually still green. Usal tends to get a little sticky that time of year, but other than that it's splendiferous...

Love it... Even despite all the first year ktm model quirks! Only have 1100 miles on it but it seems to be a perfect bike for lost coast type trips. limited payload capacity until I get a rack though.
 
What kind of riding is it to the lost coast? (i.e., what type of bike do you need?) What is the gas situation? Are there options in how to get out there? Is it off of hwy 1, or 101? Thanks - I've always wanted to head out there, I just never knew what to expect, and how to plan for it...

I know cuz i used to work there, and picked up trash in those bushes :|


Love the lost coast. Mattole is one of my fav spots to go camping. But shhhh, dont tell anyone!

You are in fact correct sir! Sorry no 100 bucks though. Perhaps I can offer you pair of very worn rear brake pads that were thrown in the bushes? :teeth

I keed. The pads were disposed of properly. Btw, really nice people there and were very helpful.
 
Thanks everyone for the nice comments. The ride was quite fantastic, just wish I could have spent more time there. I may go back in October.

Sorry 1run, I didn't see your questions until now. The blm map Blacknblue gave you is a good start. The google maps route luckett put in the original post should give you a general idea of where it is in relation to the bay area. That was what we initially started with as a plan. If I have a chance I'll take the final gps route we used and make a google map from it. My bike has a 150 mile range. Plenty of gas was available all along the route and was never a problem.

As far as what to expect. That's up to you. You can design a route suitable for anything from a hd hardtail to red sticker mx bike hauled up in a truck. In fact, Garberville clearly promotes itself as a great motorcycle destination. They've got at least two motorcycle dealers, one of which even sells ATKs! - ain't a whole lot of us folks that can fix ATKs these days! We concentrated on riding some of the un-paved and full on dirt roads. :teeth

i think we shoulda hit it up. i was afraid i'd already worn my old man out. he called me two days later and said hes coming back in october:teeth
