How to: Install R&G frame sliders on 2009 Ninja 650R

I just got done installing R&G frame sliders on my '09 Ninja 650R, and I thought I'd share some photos in case anyone else is interested. These are not no-cut sliders. They require drilling two holes in the fairing, but R&G provides a very clever marking tool that greatly simplifies locating the correct position for the hole. All in all, the whole kit seems very well thought out and top quality.

The instructions say to remove the fairings completely from the bike, so I spent about two hours doing so yesterday, only to realize that this was both a huge PITA and completely unnecessary. I then spent another two hours putting them mostly back on before I forget where all the bits go. All you need to do to install these frame sliders is to remove the fasteners on the sides of the fairings and pull them away from the frame far enough to install the brackets. It's a little tight, but FAR easier than completely removing the fairings.

As I was mostly occupied with swearing profusely yesterday, I didn't take many pictures, so the pictures begin with the right side bracket already installed.

Here's a shot of the right side mounting block installed. You can see that it mounts with two 8mm bolts that replace two engine mounting bolts:

Here's the left side bracket- you can see that it has a unique design with a tapered shim that gets pressed inside the sleeve of the bracket to clamp inside the frame.

This is where it mounts:

and here it is installed:

Next, you thread in the marking tool, reposition the fairing, and bump it gently from the outside to dimple the fairing. You can see the dimple it leaves in the photo of the right side bracket:

Now take the smallest drill bit you have, and drill where the dimple is. Check the position of the hole relative to the mounting block. If it looks OK, start working up progressively with larger bits, until you get a decent-sized pilot hole:

What you want to use for the final hole is this- a 1 1/8" (29mm) hole saw made for plastic/metal. This is a Ridgid saw I found at Home Depot:

Chuck that bad boy, take a deep breath, and drill your final hole:

Deburr the hole with some fine grit sandpaper, and then mount up the slider with the provided spacer (the spacer for the left side is different than the spacer for the right side, so pay attention to the directions):

Here's the right side drilled:

and this shot gives you a sense of how the spacer sits relative to the hole if you get the hole positioning correct:

Then just torque the bolts down to 40 newton/meters and put the caps on, re-install the lower fairings, and you're all done!

Hope you enjoyed.

Thanks for the guide, it looks like frame sliders installation was easier than I thought. Btw, what's the cost on the sliders?

Aside from all the unnecessary monkeying around with the fairings, it was actually very easy. The R&G sliders are $160, which is on the high side for frame sliders, but they're the only ones out there for the '09's at the moment. Rumor is that Woodcraft is coming out with sliders for the '09's soon though.

cool post :thumbup

i hv zero experience with any mechanical work on bikes and decided to wait for some non-invasive frame sliders to come out for the 09 model ever since i bought it. i had minor parking lot incident already where sliders would have definitely helped :( :(

two questions:
does putting frame sliders affect warranty in any way?
can you help me install those on my bike if i get the sliders? i'll buy you lunch/dinner :teeth

I've talked to several folks about no-cut frame sliders for this bike, and the general consensus is that I wouldn't trust them. There are no frame or engine mounting bolts anywhere near any fairing opening, so any bracket that would put a slider in a fairing opening would have a huge span to it's attachment point(s). These types of brackets typically fail in hard crashes. My suggestion would be to just go with a slider that requires fairing holes. They're typically much stronger (there are exceptions of course, but on this bike I don't see it happening), and simpler in design.

Installing sliders shouldn't affect the warranty in any way. I'd be happy to help with the install. It should be relatively straightforward now that I've done it once.

Exactly what I was thinking!

I'll order the sliders soon. And thanks for offering to help!! :thumbup
I will PM you once I get them. :)

No worries- glad to help.

Also, if you don't have them already, you may want to get some swingarm spools/sliders. Besides the protection they offer, they allow you to put the bike on a rear stand which is a must for installing the frame sliders. I definitely wouldn't want to try to install the frame sliders with the bike sitting on it's kickstand.

In case anyone else reading this is planning on buying R&G sliders, please be aware that the CA model Ninja 650R has an extra evaporation canister mounted to the left side of the frame that may interfere with the R&G slider bracket.

What I've learned from Ninja650shop, is that Kawasaki mounted the canister in various ways depending on which brackets they had available at the time. As long as your frame looks like JPK's, then the R&G kit should fit correctly.

Thanks again JPK for the informative install guide!
