What exactly does a center channel speaker do, will it make a difference adding one with the speakers I already have? (I have just one pair of speakers right now)

For music, no, for movies, yes. The center channel is where the voices for movies comes from.

Hard to tell, depends upon your system and the speakers. If you don't already have a sub and surround it probably won't make a huge difference.

Good to know.

Right now I have my TV hooked up to a plain ol' 5 year old Yamaha stereo receiver and it sounds pretty damn good to me.

I'm almost at the point in thinking that I really won't gain much by getting a modern a/v reciever and a center channel speaker without going full bore and getting at least 5.1

You're probably right. Two speakers is stereo. Anything in stereo is going to come through two speakers, so it won't make a difference to add a center channel. If you look at your tv programming, it should say when it is stereo and when it is 5.1 surround sound. It's probably 90% of programming right now.

Unless you're big into DVDs/movies I wouldn't bother if you are currently happy with the sound you have.

You can find low priced 5.1 or even 7.1 systems on sites like Amazon. When I hooked mine up and watched a movie, it was pretty cool to hear bullets flying around the room. The Top Gun jets shook the house.

I "heard" it makes pron a more aural experience....cough.

It's also possible to have your tv act as the center channel.

The problem with 2-speaker only setup, is that if you have sound from the tv as well, it is playing both the stereo channels, as well as being used for the conversation. (as mentioned above) If you configure your tv to be center only, it will only play the conversation, leaving the left and right sounds (as well as faux-surround) to your other speakers.

Seriously though, Hannah montana doesn't usually use surround sound, so you should be fine. :thumbup

Is your 5 year old receiver really only stereo?

Even 5 years ago it was hard to find a "stereo only" receiver; most were at least Pro Logic, if not Dolby Digital.

What's the model number?

If it is truly stereo, don't bother with the center; if it is actually pro logic, or dolby digital, you could run it in 3.0 mode with a center and then yes, it would be an improvement.

It's a Yamaha RX360.

Your receiver can be used for your a/v sound, but you're kinda missing out. Most modern tvs have surround emulation and your stereo receiver might not even give you that.

You should be able to get a whole surround system for next to nothing. Like less than $100 for the whole thing if you don't need video switching. There's a lot of 5.1 gear out there.

Well I just bought a Pioneer A/V receiver and a center speaker. Hooked it up and CAN'T GET THE MOTHERFUCKER TO WORK:mad Can't even get plain ol' FM radio to work either. Triple checked the speakers, made sure they were connected properly bla bla bla. The remote has 50 fucking buttons and I'm about ready to take a hammer to it. I'm spending 30 more minutes and if I can't figure it out back it goes tomorrow morning.

I think I'll go with one of the systems you mentioned if it's simpler to use.

dude if you need help getting your electronics setup, just ask and i will be happy to help and explain.

this technology thing seems to be a reoccurring issue for you.

So you bought a brand new receiver just now? Maybe it's on mute.

It's best if your speakers all match. Different brands have a different overall sound.

What I had:

TV audio out to receiever audio in via rca cable, worked and sounded great using 1 pair of speakers.

I did the same set up with the new a/v receiver using rca and nada, I can't even get sound from the tuner/fm. According to the book you need to run a setup but all the instructions are on the tv which does me no good.

I'm seriously thinking of going with something likew this instead:

That Samsung system would have matching speakers anyhow. If you looked around, you could find a better deal on it. I bet you could find it used for less than a hundo.
