Hola kids,

I've got a 94 fzr1000 that has an after market header/exhaust and can on it. I understand that proper power delivery is dependent on a servo motor and a couple of cables that connect to the exup valve on the exhaust. So I guess my question is this; is there anyway that this bike can be made rideable? I've found/read very little on this and am wondering if any "barfers" out there have any experience with this sort-o-thing. I've ridden the bike as is and it has a few issues but I figure before I go to "problem solving" I'd like to find out more about what the side affects are of riding the bike with a sealed valve-less exhaust on it are. For instance the flat spot between -roughly- 3k and 5k that I've read about are there but also the bike shout down on me after a good 15 minutes of sorta aggressive riding, I let it sit for about two minutes and it started up with some pampering and no choke. The fuel is fresh 91 octane and smells like it's burning clean from the can. The air filter isn't in noticeably bad shape and the plugs are all clean... Any help would be greatly appreciated.... p.s. no matter how hard or easy I ride it, it has the same issue. All the best

Good question.... I kinda doubt it BUT it seems that the previous owner was kinda hokey in the since that they drilled a buncha holes in the top of the air filter cover. I guess I could find out what the factory jet size is and then remove & Check the existing.... What has you ask that? Doesn't smell like the bike is running rich at all and the temp seems to be within spec... not to mention low rpm acceleration seeming normal..

THE CARBS NEED REJETTING. I had the same bike in perfect condition that I sold to a guy who ruined it. Idiot put an exhaust on it and threw away the old stuff like an idiot. It never ran correctly again and it went through a few owners and now sits in a guys backyard just rotting away. That bike is extremely powerful just as it was from the factory. I used to pull guys on GSXR1100's on the straights, no BS. 5 valves per cylinder and was very stealthy with the stock muffler. :]

If I was in your shoes I would make sure and put the EXUP back in the system and make a custom muffler to bolt on behind it.

fuuudddddddggggeee..... I was kinda under that impression.... A $500 bike is almost never a $500 bike is it.. Beautiful bike though-with all of the plastics, imagine! Thanks Smitherz

:laughing

We can only imagine what other things the previous owner(s) did to 'improve' the bike.

If you can get the bike back to stock it could/should run decent again.

Without reverting to stock bits/condition your other option is to get the bike on a dyno, review the dyno graph/results and rejet the carbs to match up with whatever other things you do and don't know were butchered on the bike.

Sounds like you still have the EXUP, "Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve" connected to the bike. And that you have an aftermarket can installed too.

There can be a few things happening here. But I think it is best to start with the easiest first.

You should check for proper EXUP function. This is a very easy procedure and should be done on your older sportbike. I did it on my FZR400 a few montsh ago. See linky... http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/exupmaintenance.html

There is also the possibility that the bike is "over" jetted. Yes, that can happen. There are not too many FZR's that didnt get the entire exhaust system treatment. And when you do a complete exhaust on an FZR you need to re-jet. In the case of my FZR400 I went to a VH system and it ran the crap. Only wanted to run properly from 9,000 - 15,000K RPM. And ot was loud as heck too. Then I jetted the bike with a Factory Jet Kit and it took care of alot of the low end issues. But it was still too loud. After a few months I went back to stock and extreme ridability. This was in 1991. I still have the EXUP attached but with a modified Termignoni can and rejetting.

Then there are more serious issues as carb rebuilding and valve adjustments etc...

The FZR's are solid "kick ass" bikes. Get it running right!

Thanks gents, I have none of the factory exhaust system but i see that the servo motor is still there and now that I think about it I'm not sure that it works.... I can get all of this stuff from the factory at around $1500 or just bid my time and wait for the stuff to pop up second (or third) hand. I've always wanted one so I won't be ditching it.... You boys and girls got any leads/ideas on where I may be able to get the exup headers, actuator cables and or servo motor besides ebay, craigslist, hayward/fremont cycle salvage? Either way I appreciate your help, both past and present!!!

if its got a full system on it just take it up to raul @ factory-pro in san rafeal & have them put their jet-kit in it & dyno tune it. my buddy had them do his 97 & it ran great.

The EXUP system was designed to improve midrange torque/power. However, it could be made to perform just fine without that system. It just won't have as fat a mid range. However, there's no telling what the previous owner may have done to it. One option, of course, is to put everything including jets back to stock. The other is to keep the existing exhaust system, seal the holes in the airbox, make sure the carbs are in good shape and there are no vacuum leaks, make sure the valves are adjusted properly, and then spend some dyno time with someone who knows what they're doing and get the carbs jetting properly. You'd likely end up with a pretty rideable bike if it was all done properly.

Oh, and if by "shout down" you mean it "shuts down", then you've got some sort of problem. 'Might be jetting, might be something else.

A 500 dollar bike is usually a money pit.

I would locate an EXUP valve or a parts bike on Ebay. You KNOW there is someone with one of those just sitting outside rusting away and they would sell it for like $40... the EXUP system that is. If I come across something I'll let you know. Those engines are super strong and reliable. Mine hauled a$$. I rode it to Oregon at over 110 without letting off at that cruising speed and it took me 7 hours instead of 10. That bike is fast and that quiet exhaust was great for not getting any unwanted attention. Got any pictures of yours?

Here was mine. It was flawless. Never down. I put 70,000 miles on it. At one point it was my only transportation for almost two years. And like I said I still know where it is but the EXUP is gone... which is why it sits. It's a little weathered from being outside but if you need any parts off of it I'm sure it can be had for like $300. The mechanical stuff is in great shape. This bike had balls and I've ridden Busa's and lots of big bikes so I know what real power is.

+1 to Factory Pro!
That's the simplest, easiest thing. That EXUP crap wore out on my FZ1 after about 40,000 mi, so I got a full Muzzy, and Raul set me up with the proper jet kit. I just threw in his recommended jets, and the bike ran great. (Didn't have to dyno it, although there would probably be some improvement if I did?) The Muzzy system was a bit loud for my tastes, but it was real light and clean.
The EXUP route is fine if you have lots of money and time, and want to restore the bike.

Yeah if you have a good guy that can take care of it then go for it! It's just hard to find someone that knows what he's doing and will stand behind his work until it runs correctly.

Found a guy with the full exup exhaust, servo and factory can. hope to hae it in about a week. I at least wanna see what it was from factory. I'll keep you all posted as to how it goes.

Installing the stock exhaust, reconnecting the EXUP servo and plugging all of the custom drilled holes in the airbox should get you back to normal.

The other option mentioned is to visit a qualified tuner like Raul at FactoryPro in San Rafael where they can tune/rejet the bike to run properly with all of the bike's custom/hacked modifications.

The previous owner may have mucked up the carbs and jets as well, so you'll want to go through those.
