keep a clear head when the shit hits the fan,

and not wear big ass motorcross boots when riding a street bike, i think thats what one of the problems was,i didn't think i hit the back brake so hard, hard to judge with them boots on i think.

theres an empty parking lot round the corner from me,as soon as it drys up,

im going to do some brake drills,

dont rush home to make dinner for my girlfriend before she goes to work,

Some good points above, especially practicing. The front brake is the primary stopping tool. I'd concentrate on drilling until you can get your stopping distances from a given speed as short as possible with the front brake alone. Once you're at that point, try it with the rear brake too, staying aware of the weight transfer. See what that does to your stopping distances.

As others have said, good situational awareness can allow you to see things like this developing sooner and give you more time to slow down or place yourself somewhere else. I can't visualize the scene enough to offer any specifics, but you may wish to think it over to see if it was possible to begin responding any sooner than you did. Maybe so, maybe not. Any gains in this area reduce the likelihood you have to use the brakes for keeps.

the shitty thing about last night was,

so she pulls into the right lane,so i go for the left lane not to hit her, next thing she pulls over to the left, maybe she panic to,i dont know i was fucking pissed by then,

i pull over to get my head together, and this dude in a cage pulls over to ask me was i ok,he had seen it all,

he was telling me,that he had never seen a motorcycle fishtail like that before.

and that chick was crazy, she almost hit a car trying to get away, because she knew she was in the wrong,

i get into the house,im white as a sheet,my girlfriend says to me,what happend to you.

i start to tell her about what happened,

shes like you better go to church and lite a candle in the morning LOL

i wear full gear,im not that stupid,

I only use my rear break in the wet, the gravel, greasy stop signs & leaves and such. It might be a bad habit but I rely on my front almost always.
You make cracks about budgie45 needing to learn how to ride, but your version of "knowing how" to use the rear brake, is to avoid using it almost entirely? :|

Maybe this is a little off topic (and not picking on weasel here) but I've been thinking-- it seems like people are pretty harsh around here. If somebody makes the slightest error in a high-stress situation, people jump all over them like they're some kind of hopeless moronic amateur who only got on a bike yesterday. That may make us feel better, pointing out flaws in other people's riding like the same mistake can't happen to us because we know better, and maybe some blunt no-bullshit criticism can be a good lesson, but it gets to be a bit much sometimes.

Everybody here also has their own version of what the "best" way to do something is-- some people never use the front brake, some never use the rear, some people think there's no such thing as countersteering, etc. When they've been riding long enough with a method that they feel works for them, it gets ingrained in their heads that they're "right". ...But nobody is absolutely 100% the expert that does it all right all the time.

Maybe I'm just up past bedtime and rambling, but it was on my mind.

Some people think that this is a fair and even-minded forum, filled with reasonable people. :x

On the other hand, some 'victims' get pretty super-defensive and don't seem to get it, no matter how much friendly advice they get.

Such is teh interwebz...

I:rant smell barf love in here,or is it shite.

this was a pretty good thread, some laughing, some crying, some shouting,it had it all except the free popcorn and cookies

QFT. I see this entirely too much. A person makes the slightest error - and is coming here to find out how they could do better next time - they are treated like they have no business being on a bike. How about instead of berating the guy and showing how superior you are, try helping them learn how to be a better rider so they can someday have as much skill as you do.

Because most of the riders in here think there better than everyone else,

you make a mistake, they break your balls for it,as if it had never happened to them, give the mods a bit of power, next thing there pming you, telling you there going to kick you off the site,

yes sir,we have a great bunch of people on here,

you can learn a lot here, if you have never made a mistake,

you have to be super rider, to be on this fourm,or they treat you like you have a bad case of the herpes.

its who has the biggest cock on this fourm,
make a mistake and there like lions waiting to jump on you for being honest,

:rolleyes I was pissed about your comments regarding Asian drivers and I'm not all that when it comes to riding but I do have over 100K miles logged and would be happy to give any helpful advise. I tried to bury the hatchet but oh well (ignor)

Yup, that's barf for you.

Seriously, I think most mean well here. We all want our fellow riders to come home safely, but sometimes the advice given here isn't put kindly. Trust me, I lurked a long time before I got the balls to start posting. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I got jumped on for something. You need a thick skin around these parts. Try not to take things too personal. There will always be jerks who think they are perfect and never guilty of making a mistake, and those jerks will bash on someone who is able to admit that mistakes are sometimes made. Take the good advice given here, and leave the bashing and the bad advice.

You're alive and you learned from your experience. That's all that counts. :thumbup

I dont care what people think of me on here,i speak my mine,

most of the people i've met off here are cool,

i have thick skin,i can take it, as much as i can give it,

im not going to sit in the corner like a little boy, because some mod,who must have a bigger dick than mine,is threating to kick me off the site on pm's

Oh hai! :wave :p

Dave

Hello! :wave :)

I like you..! :rose

Your about the only person here that knows what's going on out there... :thumbup

Thanks! My attitude may be a bit unforgiving, but it's kept me accident free for fifteen years (knock on wood) so I must be doing something right. I just feel if you get behind the wheel of a potentially lethal object you better pay attention; I don't want to hear any of that "Sorry, I was zoning out." bullshit. If you want to daydream, take the bus.

Again, I didn't start a thread to ban an you,and yes, you are being a little boy. I was just trying to help.

You were baiting and trolling and I started out to try & not to get you banned but you blew the shit outta that.

Again, PM me if you have a problem.

BTW: this was my last PM to you...

"Look, I'm sorry, you hit a nerve with me on a really bad day, week, month.

I wasn't picking on you. I was just trying to settle things down. I hope we can start over.

Be safe but plz be nice.

-j

Sorry for being such an asshole

... i started this thread to get some tips on ,what i could of done better ...

... dont rush home to make dinner for my girlfriend before she goes to work,

FWIW -- and I'm a new-ish rider with < 50K miles -- this is my bugbear. I've had a few incidents and for all of them (except one) I can trace back to rushing being a contributing factor leading to the bad decision.

When I'm in a hurry I get 'tunnel-thought' so I wind up not seeing and not thinking about everything like I normally do. My safety is compromised 'cause the "go go go" takes precedence over more important things like 360° awareness and traffic prediction and looking far ahead, et al.

Hmm, intersting. In a way, it sounds like the my issues with rushing are parallel with the problems that would come from DUI: (minimally) the awareness and decision making are hampered.

I'm glad you didn't die that night and put the question out to folks.

Also FWIW, yeah, BARF is a harsh place, but why it is ultimately comes down to "because people care and they understand riding can be fricken dangerous and they want everyone to end their next ride at home."

Having scary stuff happen to a rider on a regular basis, aside from its being scary, is a good indication that the rider is doing something incorrectly. If you get your tie caught in the blender every time you used the blender, you'd probably be better off not wearing a tie instead of accusing all the small made-in-Taiwan appliances around your house of trying to "get you".

You must live in the suburbs. Here in the heart of the City it's a daily challenge to even walk the sidewalks without having careless drivers nearly run you over. It's not the same as putting your tie in the blender, unless you are advocating staying under my covers and not even leave the house. That would certainly be the safest thing to do.

As far as the "out to get you" business: well no, I don't think drivers are actually out to get me, but it has been a maxim in the motorcycling community to act "as if" you are invisible and that everyone is trying to kill you. This has kept me from getting hit by cars for the past 30 years, despite how hard they might "try". You should give it a try :teeth

And you didn't address the question I asked about why I should just not shrug it off. What would you suggest as an alternative? Panic? Rage?

Speeding down Lincoln is a bad idea as your experience proves. Lots of side streets and many drivers pull out with out stopping at the stop sign and just pull out into traffic and expect everyone else to compensate. Speeding also means that even if the driver stops and looks they may misjudge your distance and speed as most drivers
don't have much practice judging speed and distance on objects larger or smaller then a car. Glad you avoided an accident.
