Just a friendly reminder to everyone to be extra cautious when sharing lanes.

On my way home today, I ran into what could be a messy situation.
What spared me was the fact that I was alert, looking ahead, and assessing the situation as I rode through.
I rode with my fingers on the clutch and brake lever to reduce any delay when I'd need to use either lever.
I also try to reduce the time spent between cars, and I don't spend too much time next to a car and an empty space in the lane next to it.
If I'm in a lane with an empty space, I am ready to countersteer into that space if the car tries to merge over.
All in all, being alert is key.

In my case, I simply had to pull in the clutch lever and apply enough front brake to slow to avoid impact while not losing any traction.

Ride safe everyone! :ride

I may be unpopular with my opinion, but with the flow of traffic going at what looks to be a normal pace, why even bother splitting?

OP.

Are you trying to teach us a lesson or do you want to be grilled on what you did wrong?

I don't view that driver as bad. He did have his turn signal on. It's totally on the rider to be prepared for that if they're gonna split.

that was actually a decent pace you were cruising at, i usually see other riders doing double your speed in those conditions, nice save.

+1

There were plenty of pockets of space in that span that you showed, so if it was me, I would've just changed lanes as allowed instead of lane sharing.

Glad you're alright though.

It's a good reminder that when splitting, there is very little room to avoid a collision should the cars on either side choose to change lanes suddenly.

Driver could have taken one fraction of a second to at least glance in a fuckin mirror.

But, as the OP noted, this is the kinda thing to be on the watch for.

And, using your blinker as you are veering into the next lane is better than nothing......I guess.

I dunno I don't wanna be a dick but you kinda seem to be going along a bit too carefree. I've been in those situations, passing someone where there is a gap and had them merge right over into me. Some times I brake other times I was too far on the side of the car and my only move was to turn with him and split over a lane. Either way whatever I did I kinda had an inkling of what can happen so I was pretty ready for some avoidance maneuvers.

In the op's defense, the driver of that car did merge without looking first. Sure they had their turn signal on, but you're supposed to signal BEFORE you merge, not during your merge (you might as well not even signal).

I'm always cautious when I'm splitting, especially when there's an open gap on either side of me. We are all aware of the dangers of lane sharing, it's just part of riding. :ride

Switching on the turn signal AFTER THEY START TO TURN does not fucking count. :mad And nobody should make any lane changes so suddenly they have to hit the brakes and swerve over maybe 2' off their neighbor's bumper. That guy is a dickwad. I see several just like him damn near every day on commute-- but still. Dickwad.

I got nervous the second I saw that yellow car's brake lights at about 0:08. With the traffic thickening and slowing down in the right lane, and such a big fat gap in the much faster left lane at that point, I probably would have just moved fully into the left lane behind the white minivan, until I was past whatever was making them get squirrely-- some kind of exit coming up, I'd guess.

If that red pickup or the guy in front of him had been the one to swerve over first, rather than the dark blue-looking minivan, that could have been pretty ugly.

Nice evasion-- but needs moar finger.

Dude, the corolla even signaled.
But I would agree, it was close--nice save.

on the other hand, this shows why red turning-signals are retarded.. the corolla's turning signal could barely be distinguished from a brake light--when you're in haste.

IT is hard to know what you wanted to do but it looks like there were liots of gaps in traffic so that you don't actually need to share lanes.

Gotta love American laws! :D

Just to be clear, I'm not ripping the o.p.
There's nothing on that vid that I haven't done...or will do again.
Just not sure I would have posted it.
