Busted navicular (scaphoid) 3 months no riding!!!

Yes, and yes. Nicky Hayden busted this and skipped the 1000cc Ducati test - that tells you how seriously you should not be aggravating this fracture.

Which section of the bone have you trashed, and is it displaced? Have you seen a specialist yet? The good news is you know it is busted. The prognosis is worst when these are missed and it never heals as a result.

It might be more time before you can ride after the cast comes off.

Don't mess with your scaphoid. I busted my left one July 10th, just started riding this week. Cast 3 months, then soft brace till fracture line was gone on x-ray. Have about 50% ROM back. Luckily it was at the waist of the bone and non-displaced. I could not have mine fixed with surgery as there were some hairline cracks further down the bone so it may have fallen apart when screwed.

If you smoke, quit now!

I saw Dr H Relton McCarroll in SF and highly recommend him. Another specialist missed the hairline cracks and said he was 50/50 on operating.

Yes and yes.

Where did it break? No FB posts about surgery, so it must have been medial or distal (middle or outer end)? Give the whole arm plenty of rest to allow the healing process to get a good start. The doctor finally got me to sit on the couch for 4 weeks by letting me know that it could be up to a year if I didn't let the healing start.

I broke and dislocated mine back in 81.

My hand was stuck back at 90%.. I knew I had a problem besides the pain.

They got it back in place with manipulation and weighting the are literally pulling the joint apart. It took quite a while to heal. I was racing MX at the time and I went back to it after about 5 months, but it did not feel solid for about a year.

Just this AM it felt sore.. cold weather reminding an old man of his youth.

I did a lot of swimming, wrist curls, squeezing tennis balls etc.. to help get the strength back. Other than a little limited movement it is fine ( and the slight old man pain).

From my experience 3 months sounds quick and this is not something worth pushing and hurting again before it is healed.

I broke a good chunk off mine but it healed without any major intervention other than a cast. A buddy of mine broke his at the same time , had to get a pin put in it and the vein that runs next to it relocated. It's a pretty major supportive bone so the 3 months is serious. Prepare to get put in an arm cast. Also prepare for surgery if its majorly displaced.

I went to Tri valley orthopedics and they took good care of me, I have full range of motion which took a while to achieve. I wish this was the case in my other wrist.. (broken radius)

my wrist is the problem. it is not displaced, and i will have ct scan results on thurs that will dictate surgery. guess i need to find a hobby that only requires 1 thumb.

i have not smoked since i went for x ray a week ago.

thanks for the advice, i will stay off it and hopefully be racing in 2012.

Broke mine on June 11th and did my first post-injury push up last night. The bone is healed, I've gotten most of the strength back and the flexibility is 90+%. On the downside, my hand goes numb after a few seconds pressure. Riding the mtn bike is OK, but riding the SM or the 300 is interesting. According to the doc, all I can do is wait and see. Riding in 3 months is possible, but 6 months to get back to 100% normal is considered excellent.

Left or right wrist? Left would be no real problem by now with a slipper clutch. The right is a real pain in the arse trying to work the throttle and brake.

BTW - holding a flag hurts almost as much as riding. :laughing
 
Get the goretex cast if its an option so you can take showers without having to wrap it up totally worth the $20. Normal cotton casts get majorly stanky.

Got to sample both a few times and I'll stick with the cotton next time. Showering without wearing the bag was nice, but the damn goertex stuck to my skin all the time so the cast didn't sit right. The thumb-spica cast didn't drain very well either, so it wasn't the freshest smelling. Buy the silicone bag and wear it in the shower.
 
Expect a minimum of 1 year before it feels 100%. It may never be as good as it was before the break. It wont hold you back from doing anything you want, but you'll know it's there.
 
Sounds like you have the right mindset - non-displaced is good news.

The cast cooler is a good contraption too. Bit pricey for what it is, but keeps the itching down a little.

yup, I broke two at the same time. two full arm casts for a wrist fract:wtf
very low blood flow so it takes a long time. Good luck on the heal. when you come out of the casts streatch LOTS! get your thumb so it will touch your forearm that will help with soreness.
 
Oh wow I remember breaking mine 20yrs ago on a skate ramp. I was in about 5 casts for 10 months. I had a 1983 YZ100 and I still rode with that cast on lol my throttle control looked funny as hell..
