Interesting. I heard that the failures were due to improper bearing fit and preload.
That is my understanding. Some units had bearings that were improperly preloaded at the factory, which could cause a failure. Then when rebuilding failed units, some mechanics re-used the same shims... Which probably led to improper preload and a repeat failure. This would explain why a few people are having multiple repeat failures on the same bike, while the final drive lasts forever for most others.
This is only for the older bikes, r1150's and prior. 05 and newer (r1200's) don't have this problem, because none of the bearings are preloaded.
