It's ugly because those bikes are just ugly. I never understood why BMW made those bikes.
 
NHSTA investigation DP12001 opened 1/20/12 is centered on 1999-2005 K1200LTs for now. But, if the findings are what we all believe they will be, the scope of the investigation should be expanded.

too funny...they're gonna conduct the research on the one motorcycle bmw sells the least of....
 
The consensus among many BMW folks is now centering around the amount of preload between the big bearing (wheel/hub side) and the cover and the fact that the sub assemblies are not correctly shimmed at the factory. There is also a crew that follows that the bearing itself is the culprit. (BMW's replacement bearing has a different number of rollers as compared to the original ones. Again, I don't know about the EVO designs.)

I know when I took mine apart (using a borrowed BMW shop fixture to check it all) the measurements didn't add up.

This is what I do for a living. I build transfer cases, differential units and PTO boxes all day long so I know a thing or two about setting pre loads.

My take on the whole matter is that the bearing just isn't big enough to take all the load, especially when the BMW riders seem to over load their bikes on a daily basis. (Anyway I do.) This and a bearing that is taking pretty much the entire weight of the bike and a lot of angular thrust when you are on the throttle coming out of a corner hard makes me wonder how the last as long as they do.

Dealers charge about 350-450 to do the rebuild when you take the final drive unit to them and lay it on the counter. The actual parts run about 80-160 dollars depending on what you replace. If the owner is one of those people who can't/won't do it themselves..well then..you will need your own, personal jar of Vaseline along with never knowing if the preload was set correctly or they just reused the existing shims.

OK, I'll bite. Say I'm an owner who wants to do his own work.

2. And how much room will it take up in the corner of my garage when not in use?

It appears you are not recommending shaft-drive BMWs to the mass audience, that's OK with me. Even BMW admitted chains are more dependable than their shaft drives: on the U.S. corporate BMW website, when the parallel twin chain driven models first appeared, one of the bulleted selling points was "Dependable chain drive." I kid you not. :rofl

Anyway, all joking aside, I'm sorry to hear BMW gave you the shaft with your bike's final drive problem. :rofl :rofl :rofl (OK, so I lied!)

This makes sense to me. It always seemed like there was not enough margin in the design, so when everything is perfect, it works. When things are less that perfect - due to overloading, stacked tolerances, whatever - you get a failure.

Is that true? Seems like there were some other models that sold less. R1200ST's come immediately to mind. It seemed like the K1200LightTruck even outsold the R1150R. :dunno

In any event, it's a good choice because it's the first model I heard of having the problem, they are generally heavily loaded (they're over 800#'s curb weight) so the bearing gets stressed, and most of them have had some miles rolled up on them. Actually seems like a good place to start.

Not sure how you got BMW admitting chains are more dependable than their shaft drives from "dependable chain drive." There's no relative statement of any kind there, just marketing bullets. I'm pretty sure the F800R is the only modern Beemer with chain drive, and the marketers would need to address that in a gentle way.

Anyway, what were they going to say? "Greasy, high maintenance, pain in the ass chain drive.?"

The fools are the one buying the R1200Cs instead of any number of awesome Beemers. Those things are ugly and under-powered. And that's coming from someone who's happy with only 110 HP.

Seriously, with all the shit you talk about Beemers, why would you choose this one to be your exception? :confused
 
not exactly. the parts aren't the same. I was chekcing out somebody's HP2 at STP and it has the oil fill on the same side as the sight glass.

They were designed based on the HP2 heads. I didn't imply that they were the HP2 heads off the shelf...hence the " ". :teeth

They sold for so much because that's the BMW way. Seriously though, it had the same power output as a Harley but was hideous. At least Harley's aren't ugly...to me anyway.

I rode some newer boxers. They were all slow as shit. I'm not gonna over look my thought on that cuz one has 92hp instead of 86hp. It'll still be slow as shit.....for an $18k motorcycle.
It's boring too. Those engines are boring. Remind me of stock VW bugs. L

ITS GOT TORQUE!!!! (or whatever harley guys yell when they need someone else to tell them they made a good decision.)

I want one cuz the fit and finish is awesome. The metal bolts and bars and hardware look great. They also go straight on the freeway better than anything else.
