Quick overview...I have had allstate for years....I have full coverage and $3000 in additional parts coverage on my policy. I wrecked my bike a few weeks ago and settled the total loss with Allstate. Although I feel I was able to work and get a good settlement, I was not in total agreement of how they valued my bike and my custom (aftermarket) parts.

What I want to find out is if anybody else has recently had their bike totaled out by Allstate and if you have purchased any additional custom parts coverage beyond the $1000 given to you in the policy. If you did, did you feel the settlement was great, good, good enough or not enough at all??

I'm trying to find this information as I believe Allstate interprets their policy incorrectly regarding the "additional parts coverage" they offer and short change their customers on the value of their aftermarket parts.

Sorry cant help with Allstate but for what it's worth i can share how progressive handled my claim. I had full coverage on an 07 Gixxer 750 + additional coverage
Coverage upto 5k for after market accessories (extra 5 bucks a month). when I totaled my bike 5 weeks ago they gave me high blue book for the bike and simply added an additional 5k on top for accessories. Have to admit was kind of impressed with the entire process. Wrecked on a Saturday, opened the claim on Monday and had cash in hand by Friday.

I believe that Progressive is the only carrier that pays out custom parts and equipment (CPE) dollar for dollar versus the standard dollar for value.
Additionally, I don't believe that Allstate considers riding gear as CPE and will pay for a helmet only.
Did you not max out your CPE in the total loss accounting?

I had Allstate for years back in the 70's; until I had a car vs. mc wreck (hit & run), & they pro-rated my accessory coverage I had been paying for years. I was thoroughly miffed & dropped them like a hot potato. "Katrina! Katrina!" :thumbdown

Since then I've had McGraw (idiots), Progressive (ok, pricey!), AAA (ok), & now Geico (seems ok.) Suggest you read your policy very closely, especially the fine print, & shop around? I felt like Allstate ripped me off...

IMHO, FWIW

THE CPE coverage issue needs to be challanged. Most additional coverage policies state the you will be reimbursed the cash value of the accessories but when push comes to shove they wind up paying out on an increased value basis. Entirely different. As far as I know Progressive and USAA (now underwritten by Progressive) are the only ones that do it the way the policy language implies :dunno

Thats how we roll....well we try, we can of...I know how Progressive handles claims (thats company I work for)....I've always been impressed with how we handle our motorcycle total losses. I've been a motorcycle adjuster for the past 5 years...although I'm currently on back up. Most customers are pretty excited when they find out that their new policy has $3k of CPE coverage built into it and they get paid dollar for dollar for it.

For allstate..collision coverage includes a max payout of $500 for a helmet.
Riding gear(except helmet) is paid out under their custom parts coverage

For my claim....I had given the allstate adjuster a list with msrp and websites of every aftermarket part on my bike and my riding gear which totalled up well over $4000. I ended up getting the riding gear covered (boots/leathers/gloves) about $2000. The bike valuation included about $300 extra for my custom parts that were considered to add value. So I ended up with $2300 out of my $3000 of custom parts coverage.

I tried to challenge the policy...I got a copy of my policy and read it word for word. I actually reviewed it with my manager to see make sure I was reading it correctly. After review, the policy reads that all parts added, other than OEM, is consider custom parts.

First was to get my allstate agent onboard since he was pretty clueless on how the policy reads and only spoke with my adjuster. After I reviewed it with him he agreed that I was right.

I then reviewed it with my adjusters manager and he pretty much said the exact thing my adjuster said. "This is how allstate values your custom parts". I tried to slow down and explain to him that I have two seperate coverages....COLLISION coverage which covers my bike stock from the factory and my helmet upto $500....and CUSTOM PARTS COVERAGE which covers ANY part I add to the bike and my riding gear beyond my helmet.

After going round and round....he told me that I could invoke the appraisal clause. I tried to explain that I'm not challenging the value but my policy. He didn't want to hear anymore and offered another $500 in lieu of paying for an appraiser on their part. I took that and settled up.

After the entire process...if I didn't work in claims and know the in's and out's I would of felt totally screwed by ALLSTATE. I was looking to see if anybody has had the same experience and see if there is way to legally challenge the policy.

hahahahahah....yeah...but.......

First...I have had allstate long before I ever worked for Progressive

Second....Progressive doesn't cover track days anymore....Allstate still does :teeth (which is how I wrecked my biked)

I, and my clients, deal with this type of situation all the time. In my experience, one usually has to provide proof of value of the parts. This can be done by having an independent appraisal, at the owner's cost, or to go online and find the exact same model with pricing. The insurance company will usually concede.

What is trickier is if one has a grey market bike or special construction. I had one insurance company try to value a street-titled VFR400 the same as a torn up CB-1. That took quite awhile to sort out.

I provided a clear list with links to the different manufacturers website or another site that shows the MSRP of all my parts. This is how I value our insured customer's parts when I handle their total losses. We pay MSRP, even if you bought it on sale because the replacement cost is the MSRP in our minds.

I fought ALLSTATE on my custom parts for a week just being told that "not all parts add value and some are just customer preference and that they only consider the parts that add value to the bike based on the their valueation system they use."

My point to them was that I'm paying for a separate CUSTOM PART coverage that says ANY additional part. To me that means ANY thing I added, not what they believe adds value.

They still said NO....I finally got tired of going round and round and round with them about policy language that they don't understand or see the gray area there because this is how they do it...not because its right, just because that is how they deal with it.

I got T-boned hard, at a four way intersection by a stop sign runner about two weeks ago by a cager. My brand new SE bike was totaled and I spent a day in the hospital, but no broken bones. My bike also has a ton of am parts & am exhaust. I have USAA and the other driver has Allstate. Still waiting to see how things pan out. I'll get back to you on that. :Popcorn

Good luck....you will likely get the same response I did....that only some of your parts will add value and that some of your parts are customer preference and don't add value.

The difference in your case is that you don't have the allstate policy...so you don't have a seperate endorsement to cover the aftermarket parts. I was paying an additional premium for all my aftermarket parts, seperate from my collision coverage.

Being a claimant, you don't have the same contract with that insurance company, so they will likely run the value with the parts you have on your bike and it will spit out a number and you might be stuck to trying to talk to a manager.

BTW...if you have USAA...did they underwrite your policy with Progressive? If so, and you have full coverage with Progressive, I would check you policy. You might end up with a better settlement overall because of the built in custom parts and equipment coverage in all new motorcycle policies with Progressive.

Sorry for your loss, and hope you weren't injured!

I just checked with GEICO (California); they cover helmets up to $400, and offer additional modifications coverage (for me, up to $2k of mods/accessories for $9/year), but NO APPAREL COVERAGE AT ALL is available!

Mrs. and I have a fair whack of cash invested in our jackets, pants, gloves, et cetera, none of which would be covered.

I intend to write GEICO to ask them to consider offering such coverage. Other GEICO insurees, please write as well!

I call Geico every 6 months at renewal time to beg that specific question :thumbup

If Progressive would rate my bike as a standard not a sport I would have them. They really do a great job with motorcycle policies have riders as adjusters and offer the best CPE coverage of any of the carriers.
Unfortunately Progressive, like Geico, State Farm, Farmers does not wrap collision and comprehensive to a borrowed bike Allstate and USAA still do.

Thanks for the words!! I was ok...bruised ribs/ego...but overall ok..Got back on the bike and road the afternoon session.

Of what I have heard (my x-coworker works for Geico now)....Geico is in the works to start covering riding gear in California. I believe it is being piloted in other states...not sure if it is an amendment to the orginal policy or an added coverage, but stay on top of it.

I always encourage people to read their policies and understand it.....of course is my case..I read my policy, I wish my adjuster would understand it. :teeth

That's messed up. You have paid a premium for accessory coverage and then they don't pay. That is wrong. I think I would pursue that further, arbitration or small claims.

damn wtf happened jason?!?!

how was your bike a total loss if you could still ride it in the afternoon?

im assuming this was at 3j's? its cuz i wasnt there :x !!!

im surprised too, you working for progressive and having xxyy insurance :laughing

hope your not banged up too bad... guess your not since you rode in the afternoon, what bike you gonna get next? another 750?

Yeah it was the 3 J's track day.....
The damages are mostly all cosmetic....all the fairings, tank, scratched rims, windscreen, frame sliders, exhaust, leaking fork seals........

I had the tires remounted since they had a bunch of crap between tires and rims and went back out and rode the last two sessions....

I was pretty sore and banged up. Brusied my ribs pretty good, they are just now finally starting to feel better and the track day was just over a month ago.

Allstate covers trackdays...Progressive doesn't :laughing
I know my ins and outs of the insurance gig

I was debating on getting another bike...but I "bought" it back and will fix it up.

i have allstate and happy...

totalled a bike 2 years ago when colliding with a deer...about 3 weeks came and cut a check...also advise me to make a claim for my gear which i got another aerostich...

Did you have any custom parts on your bike?
Did you have addtional custom parts coverage on your policy besides the automatic $1000?

Were you happy with the overall settlement amount for the bike?
