ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

Been a crazy Summer so far. Had to work during this month's ride so I went on Saturday. I traded the Bonneville for a bike that can run dual sport tires. I was hoping to get the new Honda 250 Enduro but it appears to be "vapor ware". I saw one at the Honda display in Indy (MotoGP) but no dealers had seen them.

I bought a Triumph Scrambler. Nothing quite like a 550 pound, 50 hp "dirt" bike! I felt confident as long as I had my SPOT. Got home and found out it had quit working! I have a new Spot now. The Triumph has Heidenau K60 tires, engine guard bars and a 2-into-1 high pipe.

Hope to make next month's ride.

Honestly... I wouldn't do Rayhouse alone, even with a SPOT. Since the road is not maintained I'm guessing the only emergency vehicle you can get will be a helicopter. Surely no towing service is gonna come out there.

Awesome Dan, and congrats on your new ride. Can't wait to see you roosting that mutha !! :teeth

Just signed up today. Thanks to Jeff for the invite and the Tiger! My wife and I are so in.

Congratulations Dan on your new Scrambler. That was the model I wanted but couldn't wait for so I opted for a T100 Black instead. After seeing what you could do off-road on your Bonneville, I suspect you'll be a real terror on the Scrambler.

Rod, that's why I bought the helicopter extraction policy through Spot. Rode Rayhouse and Knoxville today. The track is a little spotty (pun). It doesn't show Knoxville park or the road until I'm back at Berryessa. It was clipped to my belt under my jacket. I was talking to a friend who had his Spot on his bike. He got separated from the bike when he crashed. A farmer spotted (pun) him and called 911.

Sid, thanks. I'm still learning the bike. Those Heidenaus connect to the dirt a whole lot better than those smooth tires I was on. Not as much sliding. How about a knobbie on the front and a slick on the back? That sounds like fun!

That 2-into-1 pipe is cooking my leg. Any suggestions for better heat shielding? I have already wrapped the pipe in hot rod header wrap. Didn't do much good.

Finally found a bike and can't want to go on one of these rides! I'm hoping to have it dialed in before the weekend of 10/6-7.

Honestly... I wouldn't do Rayhouse alone, even with a SPOT.

I did Rayhouse alone the first three times I rode it. :)

I had been practicing my dirt skills at Carnagie and just figured that I wouldn't ride anything as challenging as the blue trails there. Went slow, pre-walked a few sections, no dramas.

On the subject of general prudence in a remote area: the consequences of a crash can be pretty bad even if you are with other riders. Getting from a crash site on Rayhouse to a hospital where they can actually do something for you is probably something like 4 hours, best case.

New guy

Thinking of joining you lot on the 14th.

I'll be coming from Davis so will try to meet up somewhere along Knoxville/Berryessa Rd.

Any particular time or place work better than any other?

rayhouse is great fun. I went along the north ridge to buck island about a month ago that is hairy, and I shouldn't have done that by myself. It could be a week before someone came along. I need new tires on mt dr 650, If I get them before 10/14 I will join you guys. thanks

That's even better, less pressure to get it dialed in by next weekend!

WOW looks like a blast. I only get 75 miles to a tank on the XR and have street tires....

I'm planning on coming this month (finally!).
