In some damn other life I fancied myself a blacksmith or something. Has any one here or know of anyone that's taken any of the classes at The Crucible?

I recently started getting into bladesmithing using stock removal methods and doing my own heat treating. It would be nice to get a bit more "formal" training and learn to forge weld. Of course access to the power hammer ould be sweet too.

yeah, I figure it's a good way to make oneself useful in the zombie apocalypse.

I have taken many classes from the crucible and as much as I dislike a lot of the folks there I have to say their classes are awesome. I highly suggest throwing money at them and never looking back.

Metal working, Heat treating, is fun..Knowing about metal is good.
I wouldn't kick it out of bed. :laughing

DIY anvil from a piece of rail, webber bbq for a forge... continue the DIY thing man

also, i want a damascus cleaver!

I used to have a friend here was a real blacksmith he ended up going home to Ireland only jobs he could get was making Iron gates:laughing

Stuff like this is an odd reason why first world countries will, ironically, do better than third-world countries when everything settles down after the X apocalypse (where X is some catastrophe). People in wealthy countries have the leisure time to engage in arcane hobbies like blacksmithing or coopering or chandlery, whereas people in poorer countries are stuck doing subsistence farming or other stuff.

also, the powerhammer is for pussies. if you swing your own hammer you will gain a formidable weapon in that hand as a byproduct. ever shaken the hand of a blacksmith?

But only a recreational blacksmith? Probably no more buffed out than a 15 yr old with a Victoria's Secret catalog stash. :p

Word? What kind of folks? What classes did you take?

yeah i though about forging in the back yard, i have the means and access to some equipment. Ideally what i wanted to do is to quickly forge weld enough stock for a few knives and then leave. I could get billets on ebay, but i'd rather have my own Q.C. on the materials.

little known fact:
balcksmith apprentices start out by jerking off the master smith, as the master is worried he'll break his wang.

did you check the prerequisites? blade class was 800 something and you need the intro and "advanced intro" or whatever class. i didn't check those but if figure you're going to drop 1500 at the crucible. reading on the intarweb, youtube, and some leaf springs from the junk yard would get you a long way.

yeah the $$ amount is what got me, and i've learned so much on the intertubes.

ti's what keeps me from taking classes like that. same with tech shop. i'm sure the overhead is huge and the price is fair but damn, that's a lotta money.

there has to be someone local to you with a spare anvil. SC hills are full of packrat loonies

+1 I don't know why you would go to all the bother of making knives, when you can buy really cool stuff for a fraction of the price :dunno
