Passed on the left in traffic this morning...

One thing I saw. OP was righting in the middle/ right side of the lane and as the passing moto was about to pass, OP made a move toward the left. I'm sure it caught both of you out. The pass wasn't the smartest move but it wasn't that bad. If you don't want anyone to pass you like that again stay to left side of your lane.

I'd say that most of the time BARFers are trying to get their Justice Boner stroked by posting a commuter video, it ends poorly. Like 75% of the time its a cringe moment.

Who cares if he passed on the left, you were camping on the right! Where was he supposed to pass you?!

I duno, I usually wait for a signal from other riders and pass on their right once they're aware, but that's just me?
Nope...Not just you. Sometimes people are sleeping and will never become aware. I do give them a chance to wake up and let me know is cool to pass, if not, I carefully do it.

One tip for reduced commute drama, if I'm in the #1 lane, not splitting, and traffic is below the limit, I stay to the far left side, watch my mirrors, and expect to be overtaken in my lane. But that's just me...
Yes. I do the same which does not give them the chance to pass on the left. It is dangerous.

It's kinda dangerous to pass on the left like that but I am sure the OP is upset because he got passed by a dirt bike with a rider having his socks pulled up.
Ill tell you why it is more than kinda dangerous. I was splitting when one of the cars in front start getting a little shifty, kinda drifting in and out. So I hold back passing and maintain my lane position in 1.5 until I determine a safe moment to get around. I look back and see "rickey racer" (whoever wrote this, I am going to coin it. Love it) coming up fast, slight right and behind. I look left then move left as he is passing at high speed on my left, almost clipping me. Meat wad didn't wait a half second before he decided to pass on the left. After he passed, he gave me the "I am so sorry, I am such an idiot wave"

The ONLY reason I pass on the left if rider in front is day dreaming. Even so, I pass carefully and slowly, after I give him a chance to be aware. In fact, I do that everytime, even if I am passing on the right. For heavens sakes people, quit comparing cars to bikes as the same rules dont apply. People get killed much more easily on bikes. Have general consideration and understand a bike may need to swerve anytime for hundreds of reasons. Take care passing a bike in the same lane, it is NOT the same as passing a car.

Non event. Id rather do what he did than go between you and other cars.

Startled you? Now you know how cars feel
:thumbup
Because supermoto.

That .is .pure . Sexy.:cool
I plain suck at highway riding. :( Every time i think i am doing well at lane splitting, some guy on a sumo comes by like i'm a tree and makes me feel like a total noob.
Ride your ride; Just don't ride as though you are the fastest or most entitled one out there......

dowlinginchico - the guy in your story was simply passing at too high a speed delta, it wouldnt have mattered if he passed you on the right or left, it was simply too fast and thus unsafe, not inherently because it was on the left side.

no not that.
Startled you? check your mirrors more often.

Really? Because the rider behind you is the center of who's universe? He was referring to cage drivers. Cage drivers stuck in traffic with no intention of moving between lanes have no need to check mirrors.

Point taken. Agreed. My point is that generally MOTORCYCLES move left to allow passing on the right. I do it all the time. I am saying that people should expect this, and practice this. 2 lefts do not make a right, it makes an accident.

passing on the left

Which is where you are legally supposed to pass.

That being said, I would never do what the guy in that video did. I usually practice patience and wait for the other rider to see me, or I move over a few lanes and pass them on the right.

That's because I feel it's a safer option for me and the other rider. Not because passing on the left is wrong or illegal.

i will say, this is new for me. didn't know that passing in the left lane etiquette dictated passing on the right.

it does makes sense, however. i never gave tons of thought on passing left or right, i just made sure to wait until guy/gal noticed me.

Yeah it was a pretty inconsiderate pass for sure, but come on the guy is rockin the shorts on the dual sport! And the black socks... bonus points!

Regarding lane position in traffic like that, I'm generally in the right portion of lane 1 so the cars I'm approaching in lane 2 have a clear view of me in their side view mirror. I hate camping out on the left side because I'm not sure they can see me. I also religiously check my 6 every 5 seconds or so, so its pretty rare that someone catches up to me with out me noticing. Move over, wave carry on riding my ride. It did happen recently with happy-guy on the ratninjagsxr on 880 down by fremont. Dood was rocking the leather pants and tshirt, but he was flying through traffic and happily waving at everyone! At least he was trying to be a good ambassador as he was living out his 880 death wish.

I didn't see a problem with it either. OP was simply startled by it. SM dude may have been riding faster than the OP was comfortable. Not OP's call. OP had control of the right half of the lane, leaving SM dude nowhere to go but left.

I don't always check my six while in the process of splitting. Allot of it has to do with, once again, speed delta. If I'm splitting quickly, and I realize quickly is subjective, I'm focused on cages changing speed, changing lanes, squeezing me, etc.; but, once I clear traffic and find myself in a gap, I'm all over the mirrors. OP cleared traffic, was in a gap ... and got surprised.

I should have explained a little better in OP:

Traffic was definitely over recommended 30mph for splitting, and I only split in the beginning of the video because that Camry started to move way over for me. (Thanks!)

After that, there's another biker in front. My logic was if traffic is moving, there's no need for me to fly by him doing 70mph. I hung back cuz you can't predict the flow of traffic OR the 1st rider's reactions. I don't like having too many variables when riding.

YES, I absolutely admit it was my fault for not constantly checking my mirrors. I got lazy and figured no imminent threats behind considering I had just split past the grey car. Lesson learned.

i like to make fun of otherse with the whole situational awareness is only for skilled operators, but i will say this -

i think the graduate level riders do what they can to not scare people or make them react in unexpected ways.
-i do not expect people to check mirrors when we're hustling through parts that really need all attention to what's ahead (tight and fast splitting, or shredding on a nice piece of road).
-i do not expect people to dive the fuck out of the way just to let me by (i prefer that they don't).
-i do not expect anything, really, out of other riders. bruce lee said it - be like water my friends.

I was in a hurry to get home and change. My legs were FREEZING!

+1, although that left-side pass isn't a move I would have made...
