Places for slow speed drills on a big bike

Hey all,

I just bought a Super Tenere and would like to do some slow speed drills on dirt. Any ideas on local areas fit for this?

Metcalfe has the meadow. Once won 2 days of dirt training from the county on 200cc loaner bikes. Was a good introduction, mostly on that flat meadow.
 
If you are in SJ, then you definately need to take it on Doc Wong's course. I did it on my Mini Tenere and it was a blast...everyone else was on KLRs to GSAs.

The first part of the day is doing drills in a flat dirt area. After lunch you ride the fire trails.

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF THE ABS!!!
 
You can't turn off ABS on the Super Tenere.
 
They don't want you to turn off ABS on the Super Tenere.

Fixed. There is no switch to turn off the ABS on the V-Strom, but I figured out how to hack it. You better figure out how to before you try to ride it down a traction-challenged hill.

Where are the dirt areas/fire roads that he takes the class to?
 
Wow! I'm in south San Jose. That's not too far. There are open fire roads there?!
 
Yes but you need a permit, it was a naturally-occurring asbestos mine so they limit the days you can be there per year to 5. The permit gives you the gate codes but some gates you can ride around. The others you have to jump if you don't have the code. You have a turbo button on the Tenere, right? Don't ride solo. We saw a few groups riding around but if you get in trouble, it could be a while before help arrives.

The Doc Wong clinic is in two weeks. Go with them.
 
I hate big group rides (and a big group dirt ride through naturally occuring asbestos country sounds even less appealing), so i will pass on the Doc Wong's class, and if I'm only allowed to go there 5x/yr then I still need a place to practice slow drills on the bike. But when I do go with a buddy or two who do I contact for a permit?

Go to DocWong on the Thursday class in his Belmont office, he will explain all the logistics for the Sunday ride. He will also tell you where to meet. I would guess you may not need the permit for the drills, only for the portion where you actually ride to Los Gatos Rd. But be warned, I went once, and a few people already dropped their bike on the way to the drill place. This is for riders with at least some experience, not for total newbies. And you will need to carry gas for about 170 mi, there is no gas station in between.
 
I've read a ride report about looping from Paicines starting on Panoche Rd. which turns into New Idria Rd. to Clear Creek Rd. (which is in Clear Creek Management Area) to Coalinga Rd. to 25 back to Paicines. Do you now need a permit for that loop?

Yes, the first two gates you can ride around. The last you need the code to continue.

I could't help but notice their large empty dirt parking lot yesterday when I rode by.
