So Lagunitas has filed suit against SN over the use of IPA on a label, which looks fairly similar. While I believe the two labels looks sort of similar, there is no confusing them. However, they do have to protect their brand.

That said, Tony Magee (Lagunitas owner) threw a temper tantrum when Sweetwater Brewing CO asked them to stop using the term 420 on their labels.

Come on Tony, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

You friggin' kidding me? Love me some Lagunitas IPA, but srsly? Like I, or anyone else would confuse the two? Lagunitas is very distinct in that there is a predominantly light colored background with a dark edge. On pretty much everything they do. Gotta be a serious retard (or beyond drunk) to confuse them.

How funny. I always thought it was kind of a classic thing done on purpose to harken back to the old days. As a person who works with fonts and such, this is interesting.

There is no mistaking the two labels, but I am a local so cannot be objective.

Lame. No more Lagunitas until the owner pull his panties out of his sandy cooter.

Meh, IPA, who cares :rolleyes

This. I have never understood the trend or the craze. I like hops as much as the next guy, but it's PART of the beer experience. There's more to beer than hops. If I wanted someone to smack me in the face with hops I'd.......I'd.........I'd...... drink a fucking IPA. Which I won't do becuase they're just not that enjoyable.

Whatever. Anyone suggest a good stout?

Good lord, not again. :rolleyes:twofinger:afm199:laughing

Lagunitas Cap Stout or Imperial Stout

Murphy's Stout

Killians Stout.

Stone Brewery has a Milk Stout and a oatmeal stout that are pretty tasty.

I've been on a Porter kick. It's a stout who's mother never loved it.

this country's copyright/trademark law seriously needs an overhaul if a company like Lagunitas can and actually is trying to resort to this bullshit in their business market.

Big Bad Baptists by Epic, lots of flavor even when really cold. ill prob try it a little warm next.

Back Home Gingerbread Stout by Golden Road, delicious when just below room temp.

Tenaya Creek Imperial Stout, a punch in the mouth. similar to Firestone's Wookey Jack but still different.

Lagunitas IPA is pretty low on the hop-face-impact scale. havent had this Sierra beer yet.

if u can find it, try Belching Beaver's Milk Stout. its better. the PB version is good too, practically an improvement, though i dont taste as much PB as others do. all other versions of the Milk Stout are not improvements over the original.

A good Porter is superior to a Stout of equivalent quality.

these look nothing alike to me, save for using the same alphabet.

me thinks lagunitas has been smoking too much of the chronic they're so fond of advertising

When you're not really into something, that something is crazy amplified. I'm not sure if there are any foods you dislike, but you know how dominating it is when you taste even a sliver of it? Same thing with beer. Drink lots of IPA, same as you would a stout, and the subtleties become more apparent. To many of those who are new to stout, that burnt/coffee/chocolate/whatever flavor is so dominating and over bearing that they dislike it in the same way as an IPA.

Anyway, I can't seem to find Murphy's anywhere anymore. Dat creamy...mmmm.

Jesus guys, get over yourselves. This isn't a beer review or "what beer do you like" thread. It's like someone posting that Harley is suing Honda for starting with the same letter, then coming in and posting that scooters are way better than motorcycles.

I would respond the same way....

Meh, Harley, who cares :laughing

Yeah, the math ratios are similar, but the one is some kind of antiqued stencil. The other has the diagonal on the A. Technically pretty different. They are arguing over very approximate outlines, from a distance.

Really, it's a clash of two breweries with large aspirations, so they are acting like the big boys in other industries. Kinda sad.

Yeah but that's not how you responded.

Ok, let me make this a little closer to home. A local pot club (Sativa Brothers)is suing another one because they use the word Sativa in their name.

Koi: "Meh, who cares? Sativa is way overrated. I prefer indicas. Therefore this whole thread is pointless. Let's turn it i9nto a review of indica varieties."

See my point? No? I didn't think so.

i wonder if an intellectual property lawyer pushed this lawsuit?

Honestly, my guess is that its more personal. All these founders know each other and go way back, I bet. Lagunitas has a hipper "brand" . So Sierra Nevada (who have become so very mainstream, despite continuing to innovate in so many ways), who already had the Celebration label from years ago, kinda apes the label for a new formula a bit to pick up the dumb ones and I bet it gets under the skin of the prickly proprietor. I think lagunitas did more for the current IPA craze than any other label to make it popular. When people think IPA, they always think of the iconic Lagunitas label, rather than the five thousand clever puns and funny titles of other offerings. Sierra N probably thinks, "hey, we've been around so long, screw 'em." Just a guess....

I always thought the Mitsubishi "Outlander" being a hybrid of Highlander and Subaru Outback was an incredibly transparent attempt to get some of that sweet SUV market.
