So...just so you are aware we have been having some minor issues since the site went down a week or so ago. Registration.. a dupe post here or there.. perhaps some cannot retrieve a password :dunno.. like I said minor really.

Valgar is diligently using his Pirate sword and best swashbuckling skill set to fend off some Chinese hackers.

They may demand a payment or threaten to cut off our heads..... I really don't know why barf would be a point of attack, but I guess we are.

I know this is a PIA for Valgar and probably many do not even know the man behind the curtain, but he is our Wizard of Oz and I just want to thank him for staying in the game with barf for quite a few years now. We have a damn good tech record report card as far as barf being offline and V is one of the main reasons for that.

PSA to all BARFers: Do NOT use your BARF password for other accounts you have, i.g.: facebook, gmail, yahoo, apple, online banking accounts, etc., etc. Ideally, you should have unique usernames and unique, strong passwords for every "account" you have.

Open social sites (like BARF) are easily scanned by hackers looking for vulnerabilities to exploit. Their interest is not necessarily disrupting the "box" but exploiting "it" to bounce to other more lucrative servers and/or take advantage of easily exploited user accounts.

Thoughts pertaining to the BARF site... Current version of vBulletin is 3.8.7 and latest version is 5.1.x. PHP version ? What is your procedure for ensuring patches are up to date for the current level and migration policy for keeping the revision level current?

Great tips. I have no problem upgrading financially, it is more about the pain of migration that has stopped us from staying current.
