Bruce Jenner kills woman i crash on PCH

Agreed. Individuals should be free to choose the personal pronoun they identify with. I assumed Bruce had made a statement and I had overlooked it, turns out, from a cursory search, Bruce hasn't yet.

In them meantime, how about heeshe

Yes, but there are cases that rub me the wrong way. You see a woman walking by and accidently dropping something. You grab the item, run after the woman calling miss, madam, lady, young lady, etc. You catch up with her and say you dropped this. She turns, says thanks and visibly upset adds, "I'm not a woman, I'm a man. People call me woman all the time. It gets old." Oh, OK, he's entitled to dress, look and walk like a woman, but it's your fault you have thousands upon thousands of years of evolution being able to tell male from female.

When was the last time you picked up something for a person of indeterminate gender? Other than panties? :twofinger

Yeah, that happens. We should condition ourselves not to presume and get used to gender neutral pronouns.

in an era where "Fifty Shades of Grey" was sold in record numbers, good luck. Women want men to be men as much as men want women to be women.

Oh, that and no one really gives a shit what you are, what you want to be, or who you identify with these days.

We must have different bible thumper conservative Republican relatives. I'm so jealous. Mine cannot go 1/2 day without posting the most vile opinions on FB.

Maybe one day someone who you love and whose opinion you care about will set you straight, until then you are free to be a boor. That the majority of people self identify along gender-binary really doesn't need to be stated.

You are like the voice of the dominant paradigm, do you really think that the status quo or conventional wisdom needs explaining and clarification?:laughing

Such as "It" or "You" or "Hey Person"?? :dunno

Maybe people should less fucking sensitive.

Many of the folks I know who eschewed gender-based personal pronouns chose 'they'.
I think people are callous rather than sensitive.

Or more responsible for the way they look.

Not only there are genetic/biological gender identifiers embedded in our beings, but calling a stranger sir, madam, miss, etc, it's a sign of respect and friendliness in western cultures for a thousand years.

My understanding of trans-folk is that the assumption that their outward appearance matches their gender is a form of oppression. That gender is a cultural, not a biological construct.

You are saying that instead of being respectful of people who are outside the norm, those people should go against themselves in order to be acceptable to you. That does look like oppression to me.

And by walking past them we're supposed to know that? C'mon.

You walk into a room full of people, say 5 men, your normal greeting is "Hey Guys".....that's not appropriate? You prefer "Hey Persons" or "Hey Everyone".

My feeling is too many feel they are special and deserve different treatment. Like women getting mad I open the door for them. Sorry I was raised with manners.

I feel ya. I have been in group settings where individuals would state their preferred personal pronoun as part of checking in.
Hey everyone is likely acceptable to most people and offensive to the fewest.
I would submit that the MOST correct way to address someone would be to ASK and to not presume.

And yeah, there will always be the person with a chip on their shoulder, maybe try to not be that person.

As long as you don't frighten the horses.

Please use appropriate terminology.

Bruce Jenner is a very special case. He was famous before married a Kardashian, and he was a willing participant in the show.

Did you know Ozzy and Sharon actually have a third daughter? She didn't want to be on the Osbournes.

So if Bruce gets some attention for his gender issues, that's his fault.

On the other hand, I know several trans, and thankfully, they have made it clear with what sex they are, and there is no confusion for me or anyone else.

Strangers I treat the same. I hold the door for male and females.

Again, biology is older than and often times trumps culture. I do say "hey, everyone" because it was part of the upbringing. Some women dislike miss when they're not on the market and vice-versa. Some guys don't feel old enough to be called sir. Go figure. So just with the joker card. But c'mon, is your fault you're defaulting to the old sir/madam when addressing people? You're reminding me of the "high talker" episode of Seinfeld. :laughing

I think being aware and willing to address people how they wish to be addressed when corrected, without being a privileged ass about it, goes a long way toward smoothing ruffled feathers.

This. I'm guessing the Prius owner will be held at fault:

The area this happened in has a long downhill into a 45 MPH zone, right next to one of the beach pulloff areas for toursits (not locals, cause Corral Canyon beach isn't really a beach. Lots of cars come from LA and their first run out of Malibu, run into this beach...they brake, try to do U-turns and get clobbered all the time here. It looks as if the Lexus is stopped when Jenner impacts it and he's trying to get to the right lane to get around it.

There will be some fault, but most will be heaped on the Prius. Pro Tip: A friend in college got a ticket for stopping in darn near the same spot...

I don't believe that is the case, but would like some LEO input. First, we don't know why Prius owner stopped. Did a dog or cat run in front of her? Regardless, Lexus owner was probably following too closely to stop on time. In like manner, Jenner, who,was towing another vehicle, was clearly driving too fast for conditions to control his vehicle as well. And then, of course, we have deep pockets and lawyers.

Janet Mock on Bill Maher was absolutely stunning in all aspects; right off the bat, drop dead gorgeous, and also smart, witty, eloquent, polite, gentle, well-mannered, funny, etc. My kind of girl.
