Excuse Me, Does This Trail Go To Portland?

Great pics and ride WoodsChick! Would love to get the maps file for this route if you have one for gpx? Definitely this route will go on my todo list.

Wow what a great trip!

How did you do the planning? And find dirt roads vs. paved?

Nothing like a woodschick report to start a work week.

Thank you!!!!!!

You make such great ride reports! I've been wanting to get back up to Oregon on my bike, and I'm hoping to take a more interesting route similar to yours :ride

Thank you, alemeno214! :)
Anything is more interesting than HWY 5. I just couldn't bear the thought! :laughing

Thank you, gurka! I don't do GPS, but I use maps and would be glad to help you plan a trip anytime! :thumbup

Thank you, usedtobefast :)
I use Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlases. They do a very thorough and accurate job with road designations. It's very clear on their maps what's paved and what's not, and also what kind of dirt roads they are…graded for passenger cars, 4wd, primitive, etc. I didn't do a whole lot of planning, just looking at the maps and seeing what looks interesting to me. Points of interest, geography (I like riding near water, twisty roads are better than straight, ridge roads for nice views, etc.) and mileage with availability of fuel. That's usually how I plan my routes, anyway. This one was kind of planned on the fly, and had a little more pavement than I would have liked, but I was quite pleased with the route. I would have done more dirt had I had more days to work with and no wedding to attend :teeth

Thank you!!!!!!

You are so very welcome!
And thank you for providing me the tools to do this stuff :)

If you could share the Google Maps route that would be great - would love to review the route and then generate the GPX version for my Montana unit.

I don't use Google Maps. I use good old fashioned paper maps.

Id say you're a woman after my own heart except you were doing this first... So I'm a woman after your heart. :laughing

That's fair enough. Do you have some way for me to recreate this trip online with a tool like Google Maps? If you have say the paper route highlighted or can detail the route taken and i can then plot those points myself online? Remember, I ask for all of this cause I am not from Cali or the PNW and do not know any of the roads here at all. Been here all of 2 months now and finally figured out he san fran and west bay area at best right now. Beyond that, no idea really what's what. Your route looked absolutely fantastic and would love to recreate it paper or online, doesn't matter really. I am fine using paper maps as well.

:laughing Those gawdawful boxes, brackets and gas can were on the bike when I bought it for him! AND it's carbureted so there! :x

Although now we have RotoPaxes on both bikes, but he made the brackets himself because we're too cheap (and handy) to buy them! :laughing

It actually came with a GPS in a fancy schmancy holder on the bars but it bounced off on a dirt road somewhere. We never even turned it on.

(Tank bag came with it, too. Note maps in the top of it!)

"Triple-A"… :laughing:laughing:laughing

Sure I've got a way to do that! I bring my maps, you bring your laptop, and we make sure we don't spill the drinks on either while we talk routes! :thumbup

Hah! You noticed! :)

Well, if you say this gurka character is ok I guess he can't be all bad :p

Maybe there's a map party in our future?
If I were to do it again I would alter the route. It wasn't the best one I've ever come up with. I would've done more dirt. The best route of the trip had the gate on it. Very surprised the map didn't have the gate on it. That gate and landslide had been there for quite some time. There were alternate routes but fuel was an issue, as was time. I'd like to go back and hit it from the other side. I bet we could make it through on the 610's :ride

It is difficult to describe quickly in words how cool this trip looks. I'd love to do something like this, but don't have a proper dual sport for this type of trip.

The wedding looks super cool and Elly and Finn are so cute.

Another great trip and ride report. Thanks WoodsChick!

Love your reports.
People like you are the ones who got us motivated to do our trip to South America.

Ride looks awesome!
