Do I just buy a set of Pirelli Angel GT's and forget it?

Pirelli makes good tires, so you can't really go wrong with that choice.

Since you said you have a sports bike, I'd lean on the side of grip with a nod towards longevity. If you're talking a sport touring or pure touring mount then yeah, go for mileage. Unless of course you're planning on going cross country, then just worry about the tire lasting the trip.

That said, my personal preference is a set of Michelin Pilot road 2. They're 2ct and offer better side grip than say, the Pilot road 3 or road 4. And given the application of sport touring, the 2ct should promote better wear.

Best deal right now at Santa Clara Cycle Accessories seems to be the Dunlop Roadsmart 3. I'll probably get one installed this week. I liked the Roadsmart 2. Honestly I think I would have bought the cheapest of the RS3, the Angel GT or the Metzeler Roadtec 01, both of which worked well for me.

PR4 GT worked well on a loaded at-capacity FJR. Always inspired confidence. They did get square in the back but handling wasn't hugely effected.

The new dunlop roadsmart III held up pretty good. 10k+ miles and still going. Excellent rain tires also.

Rain doesn't matter to me, I never ride in it. Long life with the best grip is what I'm looking for. I like the pointed profile of some sport tires, not sure if there's such a profile in a ST tire.

I seem to like the Dunlops.

I just took off my roadsmart 2's and I got 26k out of a front, and 16k out of the rear. The rear before I got the same mileage.

I just put on a set of roadsmart 3's and they feel like they have more grip in turns,. We will see how they last.

On my 600rr I had some Bridgestone s21's I liked those too they had tons of grip, and warmed up pretty fast. I didn't own the bike long enough to wear out a set. So I can't comment on longevity.

The Pirelli Angle GT is more of a V shaped tire. The PR4 has more of a U, and is not to my liking.

I believe the next iteration/upgrade of the Angel GT is a Metzler. Someone else will have to fill in on what the exact model is, I can never remember.

"Long life" and "best grip" are kinda at opposite ends of the continuum.

The good news is... ride enough and you'll soon be able to purchase a
different set if you don't like the ones you just bought. :laughing

And a corollary is... once you find something you REALLY like, the
manufacturer will change it. So we'll always be on the hunt for the "best" tires.

I need to try the RS3. Having ridden with Grant on numerous occasions, I trust his tire recommendations. Not his fashion recommendations, though. :laughing

Lol I *just* got off the phone w/Jim @ Advanced Cycle Services. Going to replace the worn-out Michelin PR4 front on the Multi w/an Angel GT. The rear will be replaced with a matching Pirelli after this weekend's rally. :ride
