Got my 5 year old a PW50 :)

My son is a beast on 2 wheels. He started with a balance bike at 2, was on his pedal bike (no training wheels) before 3 and now has 16 inch Hotrock. I've been scanning Craigslist for a few months now for a PW50 and finally jumped on a great deal. I picked this badboy up for $300 :teeth.

I've been doing some standard maintenance and want to put some custom graphics on before surprising my son with it. In the next few days I should also be getting all his moto gear. He's gonna be so stoked!

He knows I want to get him a moto soon so in the meantime we've also carved out a mini dirt track in the backyard :laughing

What age did you guys start your kids at?
 
IMG_0429.jpgI started my son on a ttr50 when he was 7. He is now 11 he is now on TTR 110. Just had him out at Carnagie this last weekend.

My kid started at 5 and was happy to just play ball sports by 9. I was cool with that. His life.

I wish I had never sold the PW-50 that I had. And I sold it to a total idiot too. They wanted to change the oil, so dumped about three quarts in the transmission which is clearly marked as 750cc. I had to stop by there and help them do it right.

If I had kept it, my grandkids could be riding it now.
 
Great deal on the PW.
The kids gonna be stoked!

My grandkids started at 4 & 5... last year.
Started on a single CR50F.
Now have that & a XR50.
Gotta get out and ride with those Grand kids!
Oh yeah, and their dad too!

Thanks Bud, I'll definitely post pics when he gets it. I am looking forward to having riding adventures together, but yeah if he ever changes his mind I'll fully support whatever he decides. He is actually a really great artist too! :thumbup

Wow thats young, I'm guessing they started with the training wheels? I just barely got my wife to agree to the bike thing now that he's older, and only by getting him all the riding protection available in his size.

My son started at 4. Took the training wheels off after 1 ride. They were screwing him up in turns. Still rides today.
 
My kids would go to the bike shop with me when I was getting parts. They were 3 and 2. They are 13 months apart. They would run over to the PW50 and climb right on.

Next they saw a friend's kid riding. That kid was almost 4 and had been riding for several months.

Then they were both clamoring for a motorcycle. The 3yo was riding a bicycle with training wheels. The 2 yo was pushing a 2 wheeled scooter around.

A couple months later, the 3yo was riding his bicycle without training wheels and asked for a PW.

I brought one home couple weeks later. He was about 3.5 yo for his first ride. He rode with training wheels until his sister's 3rd birthday when she rode the PW with training wheels one time and then demanded they be removed.

That was all 23 years ago. They both ride still.

Their mother rode motorcycles as well and she was all for it once they were able to physically ride and hold the PW50 up. We agreed that after seeing our friend's kid ride at almost 4, and he was physically smaller than our son, that our son was big enough to ride but he needed to ride his bicycle without training wheels before he could ride.

Once he rode the bicycle without training wheels, I bought the PW50. He would ride the PW50 for about 10 minutes and then he was done for about 10 minutes and then repeat. I had him riding in an open field near our home. Still with the training wheels.

When my daughter turned 3, she wanted to ride the PW on her birthday. She had been riding a bicycle without training wheels for a while. On her birthday, I suited her up and set her loose with the PW50. She rode it about 5 minutes and came in and asked for the training wheels to come off.

Keep in mind that one of the WONDERFUL things about a PW50 is the built in power limiters: there is a throttle stop screw that limits how far you can twist the throttle and an exhaust port insert (a washer) that limits how much exhaust gas can flow. As a result, the kids started off on a bike that had a top speed of about 8 mph and accelerated very slowly. As they learned and demonstrated more control, they received gradually more power and speed.

My daughter had full throttle no exhaust insert within about 6 months of riding. At that time we had some acreage and she was riding around the property all the time. My son was never as aggressive as she was. She went on to race MX and hare scrambles. He never did race as he was never that aggressive on the motorcycle.

When I was five, I was riding Sweetie Pie. What a bad mofo that horsie was.

I'm always impressed with parents who push the kid into a sport/hobby/whatever at a young age and they're passing adults on a ski slope or kickflipping over teenagers.

Sure, some parents push, but same with baseball, etc,
A family who is in the moto life is in the moto life and the kids want to be part of that.

Pushing kids into any activity is a nono.

Yeah, years ago I went to Sand Hill Ranch. Well they just watered the track and I SUCK in mud. So, I'm crawling around the track, wobbling through the jumps. Some little 8 year old brat jumps OVER me in a double jump on a KTM 65....:wtf

I packed up and went home in shame...:(

I never pushed my kids to ride. They all wanted to ride because they were around riding. When they decided to quit riding, then they quit. No problem.
 
Pretty awesome man, sounds like you are an awesome dad! Definitely bump this thread with pictures when it happens.

My wife and I are not planning on having kids and as of right now we are more likely to adopt but we have 3 rules:

#1 has to be a boy
#2 has to be housebroken (or potty trained as you people with kids call it)
#3 has to want to ride a dirtbike
 
My son started racing mx on a jr50 when he was 4...a few years later he was doing this! He's in his 30's now and we still enjoy riding together regularly:).
