Is there an aftermarket adjustable rearset kit that provides an option for reverse shift pattern for the '02 R1. I've seen the Graves unit, but I don't like how the shift rod is exposed. Does anyone know if there's a kit where the shift rod goes through the frame AND provides a reverse shift pattern?

I know that the attack rearsets are like that... I'd imagine they already have something done for the '02 or at least almost out.

anyway you can just flip the shift rod lever? I did that on my F4i. No rearset needed.

If the 02 is the same as the 98-01 R1's, you can't just reverse the shift lever because the rod runs through the frame. At least, I don't think there's enough clearance for that... hrm. I'd have to look.

I get so nervous just thinking about doing that... can you imagine accidently downshifting as you rev out 4th coming down the straights at The Hill? :wow

I know many people do this and would never go back - it just scares the heck out of me and, at this point, I can't justify it enough to try it out. As with anything else, I imagine you'd get used to it - I just fear the repercussions of the learning curve under conditions in which you can't consciously think about the shift.

Once you get used to it, it'll make it harder to steal your bike. Can you imagine a thief trying to pull away in 6th gear? :teeth

Check to see if you can flip the linkage that is on the shift shaft side of the rod. On the '98-'00's that was possible.

how is this done? I have a 2000 R1 and i thought you had to buy a new rod to do this, am i wrong? please let me know.
thanks

I'm one of those guys that would never go back. It's so nice and easy. It's great watching your buddies ride, or should I say try to ride you bike up the street and have them just look totally confused. But seriously, took me 5 minutes, and I would NEVER, EVER go back. The first thing I do to my new bike is coming striaght home, changing the shifting pattern, and then taking it out for it's first ride!

Unbolt the clevis from the shift shaft at the top of transmission. Rotate it 180 degrees and put it back on. See if it works. You may need to move it a tooth at a time on the shift shaft to get the desired effect.

Just looking at the linkage, it does not appear possible to just flip the linkage.

A friend of mine did it on his '99. You out there =D?

That would be me. To switch to reverse shift on the '99 R1 you have to rotate the shift arm 180 and flip it 180 so that the shift linkage goes outside the frame. You'll also need to modify the boot guard to allow the linkage to pass. I did this with a large diameter socket wrench a piece of 2x4 and a hammer...

Thanks for the info'

only problem is...
I'm looking for something that will keep the shift rod in the frame--see initial post.

Ah, that explains it. I looked at the shift arm, and it wouldn't have the clearance necessary under the frame... unless you flip the mounting position like you siad.
