1998 VTR1000 Superhawk starting issues

Hello all,

I'm currently having an issue with my '98 Superhawk when starting it up. I was riding along when suddenly I started losing power, and then the engine died. \.

Ask the man who owned one....

Rectifier/regulator, as others have and will suggest.

It seems that they all crap out at some point.

Go easy on the voltage regulator theory... it's only partially correct. My superchicken came to me at about 20k with an overheated (cheap ass connector) within the protective boot under the seat... 3 wire input from the stator, to the regulator. I corrected that with some high quality splices that could handle the higher charging current. My battery didn't last long but had been abused from not charging... age unknown, I replaced it. I started having some wierd fading and flickering issues with my instrument lights as will as light batt charging and seemingly dim headlights. I cleaned the connections at the regulator, cleaned the mount points, on the reg base as well as the subframe, and reinstalled with washers in between... the Shawk has some obtrusive welds that don't let the reg sit down flush on its mount points, impeding a proper ground path as well as destroying any heat transfer and/or free air cooling. 20k miles since as a daily commuter and electrical problems never arose... over 44k on stock regulator.

Just this morning I repaired the stator/reg/rec wiring on a BMW F650 w/100k on the frame. I know these bikes well; I built this one from the frame up (restoration) a few years ago.

The root cause of these wire burning issues are bad grounds and shit connectors.

In this case the owner let this problem go way too long and a good portion of the harness related to charging was cooked, melted and mostly obliterated.

I cut out the connectors and soldered the stator input and the DC out directly into the harness. I also cleaned all the grounds really well.

Prior to it stalling out. Anything you did worth of note? Such as filled up gas from a cheap brand gas station? But then it would have still started with a few tries.

Check connections and start with a known good battery or jump from a car battery(car engine OFF)

you could just give it to me :D

I love the VTRs... I'll take REAL good care of her :D
