Yamaha put a few of the things off-roaders have been asking for on the 2016 YZ250X, most importantly an 18" wheel and wide ratio transmission. Why didn't they bother with a large fuel tank? And I assume there's no spark arrestor in that silencer.

I'll still be riding my 2006 for a few more years but it's nice to know I won't have to get a Beta or spend as much money on aftermarket parts when the time comes.

Wow, that's pretty sweet. Looks like they're trickling a little money into the bike here and there. I wonder what the gear ratios are and if they're basically just doing the WR swap. You can pretty much build the bike they're working towards, but I suppose tranny swaps and case grinding isn't something the average Joe is willing to do. They just might have a decent machine in a couple/few years. Still a little too pricey, it's a $5999 bike, imo.

Its $1000 less than the equivalent KTM but it has no electric start and no headlight.
The 2016 KTM's also have a small bashplate but they might be more expensive
I would agree the headlight is somewhat unnecessary to most casual users but I think the electric start can be a big plus.
Its good to see that some of the big 4 is paying attention at the woods markets which they had all but abandoned for the last 10years until recently.

Betas only $500 more, with lights, prewired for turn signals for the free states, computer, a better starter than KTM, more trail friendly than a racier KTM, bigger tank, and a 300 model too which is better still for difficult terrain.

It's nice to see yamaha showing interest in offroad, especially with two strokes, but they're still behind the ball a bit here

That is a sweet bike! :thumbup Glad to see they are giving their two strokes some attention. While it isnt a huge amount of $$ put into the effort as all the parts are off another Yamaha shelf... its still attention. Personally estart on a two stroke 250 isnt a must have IMO. Mine has never taken more than two short easy stabs to start no matter what position or how I laid it down. A fourstroke 450.... well thats a whole different story.

I really love seeing all the two strokes folks are riding at off road races these days. Anyone that doesnt believe there is a grass roots two stroke revival hasnt been to an offroad race recently. When is someone going to give us a direct injection two stroke so we can be clean and green sticker too?

Until then, my 02 YZ250 has nearly everything that new X has sans of the wider ratio tranny and SS forks (I like steel frames and the green sticky). I'm slowly gathering the parts off ebay for a second motor that will have the WR gears and possibly a 300 kit from Gorr. I'm sure I'll snag some SS forks too in the future.

they put a bigger tank, spark arrestor and most important, e start. it would be my next bike.

if not, then i'll get another ktm Xc.

it's cool they are trying though.

:wow Im drooling here, after I get a new 2016 Trials bike this is second on my list :teeth
