2021 Ford Bronco - shots fired

My dad recently bought an GX 460 which has a 4.6 liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque and shitty fuel mileage. Ford recently released a factory upgrade for my Ranger's 2.3 which bumps power output to 315 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque out of an engine half the size yet still carries the standard warranty coverage since it's OEM and only costs $850. So my truck (and basically the Bronco too) tows more, carries more, gets far better fuel mileage and weighs less. If you want a luxury SUV, knock yourself out. But that 4.6 V8 Toyota is using is a total lump IMO.

I do know that four drums require a pallet and a forklift to load/unload. I'd assume they're around 50-60 pounds at least...maybe more. I've never had to lift them myself but it's one of the biggest complaints from the mechanics. We've got a special tool we made to assist with getting them off the axles now, too.

Google says semi tractor drums weigh 112 lbs apiece.

the bronco sport isn't really the same vehicle as the regular bronco. it's based on the escape IIRC and the options list looks to be trim levels and electronics. i didn't dig too hard tho

No, the Sport is definitely a different animal. If it's based on the Escape, that's probably ok. It does look quite small. As long as it's not based on the Ecosport or whatever the hell that mini thing is called. I rode in one and adults are pretty much shoulder to shoulder in the FRONT seats.

The Bronco Sport is a shot at Subaru, more specifically, the 'outdoor lifestyle' types that load the roof of their car with Kayaks, mountain bikes, paddle boards, and stuff the trunk with a cooler of food, camping gear, etc. 2 weekends a month. The types whose off road needs consist of some dirt or gravel roads and paths, but certainly not rock crawling or the like. If all of those accessories are actually competitive I think it could do very well. I have a feeling I will see more of the Sports than the normal Bronco's here in the Pacific Northwest.

Is it just me, or does the big Bronco push the button for you, but you couldn’t care less about the Sport? Smart of Ford to offer it, and I’m sure it will sell decently, but I see it for what it is, just a butched up Escape. And if I’m gonna get something just to handle a dirt road going to a campground, driving down the beach at Pismo, or a snow covered parking lot at a ski resort? I can just get one of the others in that compact crossover class that’s better than the Escape.

The big Bronco has available 35s, lockers, removable doors and roof, and all that other proper off road vehicle kinda stuff. It not only looks the part but can act it too.

All the more reason why it’s amazing to me that I’m so drawn to the Bronco. I’ve been a sports car kinda guy my whole life. I’ve never been off road ever other than the scenarios I mentioned above, which is a far car from a river crossing, rock crawling, or other real off road situations. Still not sure if I ever would. But for whatever reason, I still want that damn Bronco.

More power to ya if anyone here works on big rigs. But omg. Hell. Fucking. No.

I know a guy who just retired from wrenching at 64. Still in good shape and everything. But he never worked on any medium/heavy truck stuff. I’ve tried to position myself where I am just the Dr. House of the shop and just diagnose problems and mostly have my apprentices do the heavy lifting. This job doesn’t pay enough as is, and it sure doesn’t pay enough to wind up with a broken body in my golden years.

The Sport may float the non sport, financially. I think there is a spot for it in the market because most small utes are barely more capable than a regular FWD car with a little more clearance. And some of those are serious money (Audi, Volvo, etc). The Sport will not be cheap with the fancy off road stuff, but it probably won't be fifty g's.

That said, it will probably, on average, see more dirt than the regular Bronco. :laughing

So, the fact that the Sport is a tarted up Escape doesn't blow me away, neither does the convertible nature of the big Bronco, so while I like them in a way, neither is likely to get my money. I would be more likely to get a Ranger FX4. Hard top, full frame, 2 speed transfer case, crawl control, etc. Not as "cool" as a Bronco, but more functional to me.

Worked with a guy who wrenched on diesels for 20 years, got really bad carpal tunnel syndrome and went into sales for a second career.

To me, the baby Bronco is a Bronco is name only, but it's certainly a smart move by Ford to offer something in that segment.

Honestly, the BB simply doesn't look like th Bronco. And all the talk about 35s and motors and such are great and all, but the major selling point of the Bronco, I think, is that it LOOKS LIKE A BRONCO. It's a smart looking, nostalgia tinted vehicle. Seeing it roll and bounce at speed over the dirt road makes it just look right and balance and well proportioned.

The BB, however, does not.

I can't speak to the BB drive train, whether it's going for the Escape/Subaru market or what. Jeep has managed to distinguish its line. The Wrangler, GC, Cherokee, and Renegade, all slot in to different demographics and market slots. At the same time, though, they're available with serious drive trains.

They're all Jeeps, but we don't confuse them with each other. The BB, I fear, may not quite live up to the Bronco name.

You may as well get an HR-V, Xterra, or Escape as the Bronco Sport.

Xterra is no longer made and was based on a full frame Nissan Frontier, basically. That was a legit off road vehicle.

Bronco Sport looks to have more capable gear than most of the other FWD based cute-utes.

The Xterra like other nissans was also a piece of shit. MAybe its just anecdotal evidence but every Nissan that i've driven or known people that owned one was trash. The 2011 xterra I had, had trim peeling off the door/rear panels, Tranny replacement and other issues at less than 80k miles. Utter garbage.

I've had to do brake jobs on these things, solo :

I much preferred working on tracked vehicles to wheeled.

Can't find the weight of the brakes at the moment, but I'd take a guess at somewhere in a similar neighborhood for just the pads alone. Tough part was getting the wheel back on by yourself - I used to use a couple of 10-foot long 2" steel pipes, lean the wheel against the drum, then walk out to the end of the pipes and lift. Definitely back breaking work and part of the reason I decided I wasn't going to stay in for 20 years, at least not as a mechanic.

The little bronco doesn't blow my skirt up at all. it is certainly a smart offering of ford to create, much like the nimrods that bought an H2 because they couldn't swing a real hummer and didn't want an avalanche? i bet it'll sell quite well.

i might be somewhat of an outlier in the "wants a Bronco" demographic in that it's not really the name plate or anything else that attracts me besides the available features and size. it isn't huge (i hope) like a suburban/explorer. it isn't 100+K$ like a landcruiser, and has some sweet features that were available on landcruisers of yore but unfortunately aren't on mine (lockers. i will dominate the mall parking lot damnit!)

i do not under any circumstances want a Heep as i hear the "heep thing" is actually an STD and i don't really want one. they're also overpriced...

the chief reason i don't want the BroncScape is it's not big enough to haul the kids around in the manner i'd like. offer some selectable lockers and a manual i'd maybe reconsider and look into stunting the growth of the "junk that comes with the family" pile

That really depends on a lot of factors. Not all drums are the same and I can guarantee we're not using the same drums as a tractor-trailer. We're not any near 80,000 pounds.

Dude...the average age in my shop is 52.5. The guys have all been here close to if not over 20 years. 95% of lifting is done by come-a-longs, cranes or other mechanical lifting devices. Believe me when I tell you that their union would NEVER allow shit to be lifted manually without assistance. And for pay, journeyman start just shy of $50 an hour. You do the math. There's a reason the guys don't leave and spend their entire careers with the company.

That said, I'm not ashamed of going to college and pushing forward into management so as to get off the shop floor. My knees and back just weren't having it anymore after 15 years.

Ditto...sucked.

I much preferred working on tracked vehicles to wheeled.

Also ditto. I'm looking forward to moving to a yellow-iron facility next and getting back around tracked vehicles, though. I miss the tracked world.

That’s way more than I get. Way more. But I do remember way back in trade school, they were saying if you want to make the real money to go through the diesel program and learn to work on medium/heavy trucks. A couple of my guys left about 4 years ago to go work at a maintenance yard for medium duty trucks. Hear from them from time to time and even though it just looks like that job is physically kicking their ass, they couldn’t be happier they made the change.

I see it as a capable replacement for the Cherokee XJ.

That Badlands spec right there and probably even in that color is exactly the one I want. Why must you people tempt me!
