2026/2027 NFL Thread

Yes, if they go 19-1 and lose the SB to KC (again) then 6-0 is irrelevant.
6-0 is always irrelevant. 17-0, now that is something, but I think it is unlikely for the Niners, or any team really. They are good, but they are old, heavily injured, and early in the Season. That doesn't smell like an unbeaten team to me. Someone will catch them limping with later season games against the Vikings, Chiefs, and Giants (All currently the head of their Division), odds are good they let it drift. If they go 15-0, I might even recommend resting the starters against Philly and Arizona in the last 2 weeks, assuming Seattle isn't a threat to take Division.

They'll probably lose to Atlanta. They SHOULD rest Evans even if he thinks he can go, and don't bother letting Bosa come back yet.

I'd actually consider sitting Brock and letting Mac Jones have a game. Short rest, east coast, early kickoff, and a non-division game before the bye week. It could not matter any less.

How is 58 the 3rd longest at soldier field? It's been around forever!

The use of special footballs just for kickers has increased FG distances by a shitload.

45-50 yard FGs used to be considered long. Now 60 is doable for multiple guys and 55+ is not out of the question for most kickers in the league.

no dont sit brock purdy, ever since brock bowers came back in week 3, ive started both of my brocks in my fantasy and have been undefeated

6-0 is always irrelevant.
Not really. It's a bit of a barometer. Between 1968 and 2025 there have been 13 teams that went 6 - 0 and then lost their 7th game. Of those 13 teams, everyone of them made the playoffs, but only two of them won the Super Bowl, the 97 Broncos and the 99 Rams. Going 6-0 and then losing the 7th game makes it improbable, statistically speaking, that a team will win the SuperBowl.

Great stats compilation. Thanks!

You missed one. a third team that started 6-0 also won the SuperBowl…in fact they are the only team to have a perfect season.

Also the 78/79 Steelers went 6-0 and won the SB. The 84 9ers went 6-0 and won the SB. The 85 Bears went 6-0 and won the SB.

I stopped looking at 85 but I suspect there’s more that you missed.

...lose their 7th game.
edit to add: In summary: If you track every NFL season from 1968 to 2025, you’ll find 27 different teams have opened a season 6‑0
He did say lose their 7the game and then win the SB, but he missed the 84 9ers. They won their first six lost their 7th then went on to win the SB.

This just seems like a weird stat to focus on because you can say that only 50% of all teams that have had an undefeated regular season have won the SB.

Given where the 49ers are specifically THIS season, thought the stat probe was...interesting.

Players should play. Coaches? Despite talking about a season being week-to-week, I always forecasted probability, even as a high school coach.

Where the other teams are in their division, the 'Niners current record, their chances are very, very good to win the division. One injury could change that. That's the NFL. But right now...

Go `Niners!

Based on the 49ers chances to advance to and thru the playoffs, I'd recommend not scheduling your annual physical in mid-February. Why?

Breaking diet every Sunday, week-after-week takes its toll on your waistline. I've told my doctor, "It's the 49ers fault. Super Bowl run!"

YWMV

That "stat" is an illusion. lol.

Every team has a 3.% chance to win the SB (1/32) by default at the start of the season. Even if that weird "6-1 but lost 7th game" thing meant anything, the fact that 2 out of 13 teams won the SB makes it a 15% chance so 5x more likely.

but also every NFL season is different due to roster turnover, schedules, travel, etc. So past seasons mean next to nothing

mikev- The 'weird' is where we are. My interest is whether the 49ers are statistically likely to provide an excuse for consuming mass quantities.

I will point out that your opening sentence is a fallacy of probability. One in thirty-two is a descriptor of a team being 3% of the NFL. Certainly not the probability of their winning a Super Bowl. You know that, therefore, that isn't relevant to this conversation of what could happen based on where a team is now.

As I said, interesting. Losing interest in it now. ;)

Where's my chips and dip?

I'm going to go buy me a Lotto ticket because my odds are pretty good at 50/50, I'm either going to win or I'm going to lose.

I said teams that were 6 - 0 and LOST THEIR 7th GAME. Fuckin read dude.

History repeats itself in sports. You can argue it all you want, but the stat is the stat, "illusion or not" SF is 6-0 If they lose tomorrow, make the play offs and lose, I'll be reminding you of this conversation. :)
