$20k for classic car. What do you buy?

With low miles and good condition (no paintwork) for under $20K...yeah, very hard. Plus, it has to be an M6.

Years ago, my neighbor had a 1970 Formula 400 Firebird, 4 speed, all stock, even the hubcaps. He offered it to me for (if I recall correctly, in the late or early 80s), $1500. I thought he was nuts. Way, way, way too much. That hindsight is a motherfucker. I believe I bought a Datsun 510 instead, that was a rusted out piece of shit. Of course, if I had bought that Formula 400, I would have driven it into the ground, because that is what I always did.

I have 2 collectors for sale currently, 1968 Camaro and 1956 Chevy Truck. Either one can be bought for approximately $25,000

Pretty sure 68 camaro side view mirrors are supposed to be square.

At that price point for something that shiny you expect 100% accuracy? :laughing They're $31 at Jegs

It is another one of those cars where you get out your credit card and one of the eight catalogs of repop parts, and you could make it into whatever version of the 1968 Camaro you really wanted. There is probably someone who will manufacture a build sheet/option tag thing for whatever Camaro-corn you want. Just like all the Elenor 'Stangs coming out of Texas.

It might also have rear disc brakes and FI. Not my area of car interest, so those might be stock features :laughing

This is about a classic (not defined) for $20k or under, if you're concerned about accuracy and OEM parts - buy a brand new sub $20k car, a trunkful of rubber parts, park it for 25+ years, and then you can have a preservation class concours winning car- if there are knowledgeable judges.

Depends... Motorcraft, AC Delco, MOPAR, etc, have been around a while. :D Same brands, not exactly the same thing, tho.

A Model A can keep up with modern traffic 65mph or so, can be had in decent condition for under $20k, has one of the better, friendlier, lowest ego clubs out there. Insurance is nil, theft probability is also nil - vs. a muscle car, 99.9% of the parts are available, and you can work on it yourself with some creativity, a Swiss Army Knife, Leatherman, and a rock.

Looks a little odd to see a 260hp Cosworth engine painted Ford engine green

Glorious sounds and even a hidden switch to make it miss and sound OG. Video is here.

What is the drivetrain like?

What is the drivetrain like?

4-cyl, 3.3L
40HP
25 - 30 mpg

It is an 'L head,' almost like a 2T where the head is just a cap that keeps the spark plug and combustion contained. Getting air into the engine for combustion requires it to make a turn somewhere between an 'L,' and a 'V.'

Cooling is a bit of a challenge because you could only go so fast for so long before the good bit of road ended, a dinosaur crossed the road, or your hawt flapper chick got the vapors because Lou passed you so fast on his motorcycle and was impressed.

Oh yeah local pricing:

Silly goose, I meant the drivetrain of the cosworth rig. My grandfathers model t left us walking when I was about 6 years old after the crankshaft snapped. I vaguely remover the colorful language gramps used on that day.

Quack you! :laughing Or whatever geese do.

Model T is different beast, 1/2 the HP and much harder to drive - lots of pedals/levers. Cotton or wood transmission bands that are kinda the clutch.

No recollection but it was built for a rally driver who could afford the work.

The video is in the link posted by the Nordic rally car specialist/builder of the car MHT IIRC. It was also featured in Hot Rod at some point. Yahoogle is a friend.

Exactly the point, so easy and cheap to get it right so why not?

Until you pointed it out, and I sourced it for him/her, it would have been a bargaining point 'They're nearly impossible to find in useable condition, and chroming and repairs are in the hundreds, if not $1k area....' :laughing

Maybe it is just a test for Camaro nerds? Conversation starter so a lonely owner can play 'Are You More Knowledgeable Than the Car's Owner' at car shows.

A case of 'I spent my $$ on bitchin' 24" dubs, and 7 million watt woofer system, and not the cooling system?'

There are also some details after a long build, speaking for myself - where done is done and it has taken 200% longer, cost 100% more, and SO was 400% less supportive than they initially claimed they'd be - where those last few $20-80 details are just continuing to beat the horse that is already mush.

Truck is supposed to disappear this weekend along with the camaro. Both staying in state. Truck is going for a steal of a deal.

I'm not sure about the mirrors but for the price....it's a driver, not a museum piece.

If you're looking for accuracy, better sell the house. Last car I helped move in that condition was about 3 years ago. A convertible, shit I even remember anymore whether it was a dodge or chevrolet but it sold for $98,000 at barret jackson grade quality. That seller just sunk over $100k in the past year on a dodge charger. Complete restoration down to the screws, everything number matching, frame off. Started as a $1000 shell just one year ago. I won't even walk closer than 2 feet from it.

I consider camaros to be gold right now.

It's called attention to detail. Not sure what you guys seem so upset about, as all I did was point it out. Might just be the mirror, but if I were going to look at it in the back of my mind would always be "well if he half assed something as simple as this what else is hacked?". Who knows, maybe the guy just likes how the round mirrors looked. Glws
