How much would have those stocks lost you in the 2008 crash?

How much would have those stocks lost you in the 2008 crash?

Before the crash I was a mutual fund guy and sold all of them in the summer of 08. I took a loss but not near as bad as I would have if sold in Oct 08.
With redemption fees management fees no more mutual funds for me. ETF and individual stocks from here on in.

I like S&P 500 tracking funds so I can get away from specific firm risk. Still leaves me exposed to market risk though

Anyone who believes in sure things in the market is an idiot.

Even including the crash, my IRA portfolio made some money last 6 years. I still don't think stock and sector picking work for small investors. It's great to think you're a genius in a rising market though.

Me too. I think I only lost about 2 thousand bucks total. Diversification goes a long way.....

The $400 an ounce gold I bought years ago has certainly appreciated! It just about makes up for the Worldcom stock in my IRA that went to zip/

not to take away from your genius but almost any investment started shortly after the Oct 2008 plunge will be looking stellar right now.

BofA had even dropped to $4.

Please don't spoil his delusion. :teeth

If I had a nickel for every friend who told me how great they were at stock picking only to watch them lose it big later (or find out they picked their stocks based on the color of the companies' logos or throwing darts...), I'd have a bunch of nickels.

I could invest those nickels for you. I'll turn them into dimes.

Geez what a bunch of grumps in this thread! :laughing

Blankpage good for you, you significantly outperformed the market and you deserve credit for that. I didn't agree with some of your picks (Sirius for instance) but it appears you were correct there, at least.

Granted I don't know your style at all, and certainly a raw % of return doesn't reflect the risk you took to get that gain, but provided you were just watching the market closely, investing in what you did research on, and generally didn't put more than a handful of your portfolio in very high risk / leveraged instruments, it seems you deserve some credit.

Get back to us in twenty years and let us know how it goes. ( I had an astonishing return over the last 2 years. ) As did anyone invested.

I'll get back to you but after I find the thread where I said it was a sure thing

:laughing Yeah it's pretty funny. The guys doing the most bitching are the ones that give the most expert opinion on the greatest number of topics posted here. Good old BARF
I actually took big chances. It could have ended ugly.
