I got a mechmaxx P4206 6-in chipper.
Amazon was way cheaper than buying direct from mechmaxx, But Amazon wouldn't ship to California. I didn't follow through to see if Mechmax would.
I had it Amazon shipped to a friend's warehouse in Reno and picked it up there.
I got this size because it's fairly big, has a Briggs & Stratton engine, it cannot be towed on the road, but I can tow it behind my SXS or even my lawn mower, and it's also easy to roll around by hand which I have done a ton of while chipping to direct the chips where I want it and move along the massive piles I had.
Downsides
- I have found I really can't put anything bigger than 4 in in it, and even that would only be for a short piece. It is happy with twigs and brush and 2-in stuff.
- also it has reversible knives and I have trashed both sides of them already in 40 hours.
- I also shut it down one day and didn't clean the input and exit chutes, And when I started it the next day it must have had a small piece of wood that kept the drum from starting spinning and I smoked my belts before I realized it. They still work, but they have a flat spot.
- no hydraulic feed, it is a "chuck and duck" feeder
I ordered two more sets of knives and an extra set of belts direct from MechMax, they just shipped yesterday after about 4 weeks, and a follow up inquiry to customer service about the order a week ago.
It has been good for what I needed for so far, which was getting into a tight area and being mobile.
for the amount of work I have forthcoming years, a small commercial chipper with hydraulic feed wood be fantastic, but for this one project The smaller mobile worked, I just have to be realistic about what it can do volume and size-wise.
