80s Cult Classic Movies list

Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer, might be considered a cult film. Don't know if there is an active fan base exactly, but it is a very powerful and polarizing film in how it depicts cinematic violence. I recall Fangoria saying that it was the first film that the MPAA did not give the option of cutting certain scenes to obtain an R rating, it's overall tone was just too dark and disturbing.

:applause

Uh

Escape from New York

Kinda successful at box office...But no one talks about it. Yet its post apocalyptic setting and events inspired Snake from the Metal Gear series and I swear Fallout took aspects from it for the raiders etc. Just more influential than expected really.

Lao Pan! Ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny!

Also, any Canadians care to explain what "hoser" meant from the movie Strange Brew? When I was little watching it with my friends, we thought they meant "poser". Takeoff you posers!

The McKenzie brothers are credited with the word "hoser". A popular origin is that before ice resurfacers, the losing hockey team would have to hose down the rink after the game.

Akira, in case it hasn't already been mentioned.

The Decline of Western Civilization, if documentaries are allowed to be considered cult films.

Fitzcarraldo.

I remember Fangoria magazine!

"Eating Raoul" was popular with the b-movie art house crowd, Paul Bartel even directed the original "Death Race 2000".

not the 80's, but Blazing Saddles is even more awesome today.

Kinda sad to watch "Decline 2: the Metal years" today... like looking at a yearbook later in life and being slapped by unfulfilled promises.

Like that dude from WASP downing vodka in a pool...

... with his mom quietly sitting in a chair poolside, a few feet away.

Who was the other guy saying they were gonna be "bigger than the Doors"? The fact I can't remember who he was or what band he was in kinda sums it up.

Talk of Decline 2 reminded me of another 80's cult film,
Heavy Metal Parking Lot!

Hot Tub Time Machine!!!
Are we having fun yet?

timerider - crazy sci-fi moto movie. dirt bike racer dude accidentally time travels during a race, and ends up being chased around the old west by a gang of outlaws who are after his ‘machine’.

i love movies with great lines.

“You shot it. What a bunch of dumb sons of bitches, you *shot* it! A *machine* - you BUTT-HEADS!”

and

her (with a pistol pointed at him): take off your clothes.
him: what?
her: you heard me Mr. Swan.
him (laughing nervously): i do not believe this, you can’t...i mean a girl can’t...
her: i’m very serious, you take ‘em off.

It is great, finding someone who had a VHS copy of it was part of the fun. A ton of great movies in this thread, hopefully I'll watch a couple this weekend.

Watched it... OMG. :laughing

Truly a time capsule, to say the least. Funny thing is I have a friend that moved here from Maryland that still thinks Judas Priest is the greatest band EVAR! (Now I at least have some insight as to why... :laughing )

To be fair to your friend, Judas Priest IS one of the greatest bands ever!

+1

A lot of the movies mentioned aren't cult movies, they were mainstream movies that were popular upon release and have maintained a following.

So much this. Weak sauce.

Drug Store Cowboy
My Favorite Year
Both great films, for totally different reasons, or at least different genres.

Ok so now I guess we're just naming movies. :laughing

Sadly.

Let me throw in almost anything by John Sayles from that decade. Brilliant filmmaker who was very active in the 80's, and whose films generally had a small audience.

Two that stand out for me from that period are:
The Brother From Another Planet
Eight Men Out.
